I've done a fair amount of searching to find others with the same problem, and I find its common but I cant see any answers applying to me.
Car died a few times over the course of a couple of months, rolled to a stop, and it started again, then one day died for good wouldn't start, though it was turning over fine...Called out the RAA he checked the plugs then followed the spark backwards, noted that there was no spark at the coil and advised me to replace the ignition module. So i put the car in the back yard bought a ute for work and ignored it for 6 months.
Which brings me to now, 200 bucks for an ignition module - Nothing.
65 for a coil - nope
10 bucks or something for a coil lead - nope.
If there's no spark coming from the coil would it be right to assume that the problem lies before the dizzy? Or does the hall sensor in the dizzy stop the coil from firing in some way? I've checked all the fuses and everything else I can think of, followed wires all over the engine bay to find anything amiss and cant find anything. Though I did find a high pitched ringing coming from the alternator...that stops when u unplug one of the wires...wierd anyone heard of it?
The most obvious next step is to replace the dizzy...but I just wanna know why the dizzy would stop the coil from firing, or if it does...Is it worth doing a dizzy yourself or are you better off sending it to the pros to get it right?
I'm not too familuar with your engine inparticular as i haven't worked on one, just the old 308's, (VH) but how's the condition of Rotor button, Distributor Cap and Condensor? If either is faulty, your not going to get any spark, or weak spark. Cant say i've heard of your alternator prob though! That is is weird hey?
try your ignition relay swap it with one of the other for a while seen it happen when it get hot it fails when its cools down its good
I think the dissy stops the coil from firing because the Hall sensor fails. Seems to be a common problem so it may pay to do a search on this forum. Good Luck.
I have swapped ignition relay around for several other relays.
Update:
I've done the ignition module, the coil and lead, and the distributor now and I still have no spark... Though with the dizzy out I did find a bunch of wires that have been squished between the gearbox and engine...
Oh yeah...and the top two gearbox bolts were loose, the distributor turned easily in my hand before I had even picked up a spanner to undo it...the throttle cable assembly was finger tight, and so was the fan bolts. gg mobileautocare.
So...its got to be one of those wires right? There isn't anything else it can be right...? Dizzy coil ignition module leads...Were probably all fine...
sounds like you need to adjust and set the dizzy right, fix those wires and see how u go.
O, and find a new mechanic. check you have power where it should be if still no luck.
