    Default Motor Fan not working

    Hi guys,

just realised my motor fan doesn't start up. Didn't pick up on it cus of the CAI blocking my view. It should turn on when you start your engine ye? Well my engine bay gets really hot and I've got rough idle when it starts getting hot (my revs would go from 900 to 700rpm and then rise and fall again, whole engine kind of shakes like its about to stall) ... not sure if thats got anything to do with the fan not working but it's a problem I just found.

Never had any fan experience, I've checked the fuses inside the engine bay ... swapped some around and still no start up.

Any suggestions on how to check for fault? could the fan literally die? or would it just be a fuse/connection problem? I've manually spun the fan so it's not getting stuck.. just looks like no power going to it.

let the car idle and wam up. the fan will not kick in until the temp gauge get up over a quarter to almost to half. it will take a few minutes to get there then you will hear the fan start up and the temp gauge will drop back down a little.

Turn on the A/C and the engine fans should start straight away.

Sounds like your main problem is the engine having a rough idle and revs going from 700 to 900. Could be one of many things - more info is needed like how worn is the motor, does it lose coolant, use oil etc.

The fan should not turn on when the car is started under normal conditions.
It should come on when the gauge reaches halfway to low speed and the at 3/4 gauge it should switch to high speed (on the VS)

    More info aye.
Lets see.... It only started after I flushed my engine/radiator coolant and changed my engine oil (maybe it's neither those problems), but before I changed that... my fuel pump died and had to get replaced, while doing that I replaced the fuel filter (because my car drives mainly on gas.. it kind of died) and my injectors need to be cleaned because barely used fuel in my car. I've put new spark leads and spark plugs on (which doesn't really matter).

The only time it is bad is when I've driven for awhile and my temperature gauge shows 1/4 to 1/2 and my car is parked/traffic lights. When my engine is cold it doesn't do it. My car has done about 214,000kms.... haven't had this problem before.

If you need more info let me know, I just don't really know what you want to know

I would take carefull note of the posts that mention your Fan will not kick in until your engine has been running for a while, if starting cold and leaving in idle this can take up to 10mins to acheive...
as for your rough Idle speeds, I would probably say the Throttle body is dirty and needs cleaning, that or take it to a mechanic, or holden mechanic and tell them it's needing a major service, also get them to clarify that your Thermo fan will not kick in until at least getting hot enought to do so... they'll check it, and let you know of the outcome...

I have this problem too with my 96 VS. This is a known problem on some pre 97 Commodores. Holden's Tech department response is to upgrade to the temperature gauge sender part #92063571 ($10 worth). However apparently it is fine to run the motor with the gauge reading between 1/2 and 3/4 on Commodores with the known issue.
