Hey, first off sorry if this is in the wrong forum, Please let me know if it is.
Vehicle - 1996 VS exec II ecotech motor
Recently I was on a long trip and all of a sudden my power steering shat itself so pulled over and had a guise under the hood to discover my pulley belt had snapped, Upon further inspection I found that my air/con pump had completely seized which of course caused the pulley to snap. I need to get my car back home and have 2 questions:
Is there a way to install a new pulley belt bypassing the aircon rotor?, I doubt it as all of the pumps run off the 1 belt but thought i'd ask...
Also, can I buy a 2nd hand air/con pump and throw it in without gassing/setting up the aircon pump, basically so it will just spin the belt and get my car home?
If so what model commodores would have a pump compatible for my VS that I can get from the wreckers?
Sorry i know they are stupid questions but I'm not really good when it comes to cars, thanks in advance.
Firstly, the belt would need to be of a different size, and from memory you'd need to have a different pulley setup! So sadly it wont work!
Yes you can get it home by changing the pump over, but you will need to regas it in future! It could be cheaper to organise a tow truck?!?! And if you call the RACV/NRMA/RACQ or whatever wherever you are they can usually take it straight to a mechanics to get fixed too!
Hey champ thanks for the reply!
The car has already been taken to mechanics by racv bendigo(i'm in melb) But they reckon it will cost me upwards to a grand to get it all fixed up, I was thinking I could just go to the wreckers, grab one that spins for cheap and ask them to chuck it on for me. Hopefully it wouldn't be too expensive. And At least I can drive it back to melb and deal with it in my own time.
cheers for reply.
Yeah id go wreckers. They are probably charging you for a reco unit. Go get your own from the nearest pick-a-part and give it to them to whack in. If you get them to supply it the will probably tax you a little extra mechanic tax for that.
you can get a shorter belt to byepass the a/c not manny places have these in stock but they are availble, might try repco bursons etc, and ask for a non a/c belt it will be alot shorter
^^
agreed, you can get a shorter belt for no a/c. I had the length, but cannot find it sorry.
I dont imagine there was ever too many made but you could buy a new vs without airconditioning. This uses a shorter belt and as far as I know the rest of the pulley arrangement remains the same, just bypassing the ac compressor. So as moff_man said above maybe an easier option for the time being would be to purchase a non/ac drive belt.
thanks to all who replied.
cheers
yeh you can def buy a shorter belt and who cares about air con uve got windows dont u.................
