Default VR And VS Automatic trans the same?

I found one or two threads regarding this but didnt give me a 100% Answer..

My friend has a VR stato that has done the trans.. we got a couple of VS auto trans here but will it work with the VR Computer? i understand they will bolt up.

Any help appricated and if they dont work is there any work around to easily make it work? Thanks.

Most vs boxes should have 6hdd printed on them, if the one from the VR has 4hdd on it and the one from the VS has 6hdd on it, I am fairly sure you should swap the extension housings over so the speed sender works properly.

Thats just what ive read onhere anyway, otherwise they are both electronically controlled and both bolt straight up.

u can put vs tranny into vr and no problem with the ecu but not vr to vs, just use the extension housing of vr .

I've got a 4HDD in my VS, it's the factory box.

I have read that the number corresponds to the year it was made (e.g. 4HDD would be made in 1994). I'm not sure about this though.

correct, the * in '*HDD' denotes the year it was manufactured

    94 4HDD
    97 7HDD

I think you'll find that the ECU operates the VS box whilst a separate PCM operates the VR box. What this means is that the electrics plug from a VR will not fit the VS box...from memory it has and extra pin on the connector. The extra pin has something to do with locking the torque converter. It's possible to modify the wiring and this problem has been covered before so maybe a search will find a proper explanation.

I was told when i needed a new auto for my VR (it has a 4HDD) that 5HDD's fit but you need to modify something and 6HDD's don't fit in the VR. Thats just what i was told so i just got another 4HDD.

I thought since the VR had a buick it had the same trans as a VN/P. So Holden had a different trans for one model then changed it when the VS came along?

I'm pretty sure that the VN/VP trans is cable shift and the VR/VS trans is electronic shift.

VR - VS trans are very similar, they have been built the same, but for a VS i would highly recommend a later model trans as this reduces issues for the future!

Alright well being the same model regardless of having different pins it should be able to be rigged up one way or another? It seems being a VR Statsman it has the extra pin anyway? All good ill start swapping.

the VT box has alluminium pistons, while the earlier ones used plastic I think, but dont quote me on it, along with a few other minor things like that, all parts between a VT box and a VS box are interchangable as far as I know.

to the OP VR and VS boxes both are run via the ECU.

go to you tube and look for "boxwrench 4l60e" thats a good place to start if you are interested in learning about the internals of your auto, from there google is your best friend.
