Default VR Brake Shudder - Help!

    Hi All,

I have a 1994 VR Series 2 Commodore (Non-ABS). The car has a shudder when braking. I have driven the car this way for a while until replacing the two front discs & new pads all round. I had hoped this would fix the problem as, to me, it seemed like 'warped' rotors. However after replacing the discs & pads last week & following the bedding in procedure, I still get a shudder (not as bad) when braking!

Does anyone know of any other possible causes OR have had this same problem?

    Any help much appreciated

    Chris

do you feel the shudder through the steering wheel ? if not it could be the rear brakes.
could also be a sticky calliper. did you grease the slides when you did ther pads?

Unlikely but have the rear rotors machined and see how ya go. Seems to me like the fronts need machining even though they are new. Its hard to stuff up but are you sure you got the rotors on right and tightened the wheel nuts right, as in across from one another not working your way around

sticky caliper would cause braking... not shuddering... wouldn't it?

If you feel it in the steering wheel, then it's probably the front, and in the brake pedal, then its probably back

if the slides are stiff you can get uneven pressure on the pads and crap braking.. don't know if it would feel like shuddering or what, but its always a good idea to grease the slides anyway.

Do you get any knocking noises from your front end when going up and down driveways or speed bumps, might be some bushes in the front end and your only noticing it on hard braking?

    Hi All,

    Thanks for the suggestions!

greenacc: Yeah, the shudder can be felt in the steering wheel. Forgot to grease the slides! Will give that a try.

VrWagz1: Yeah, pretty sure put the rotors on right, bolts on in cross pattern & all torqued to 110nm

    Da-roosters1980:
Haven't noticed any knocking noises, but will check the bushes, thanks!

When changing the rotors I did notice that the front wheel bearings seemed a little stiff (still spun but stopped quickly), do you think this could cause a shudder under braking? Car seems to roll fine however.

    Cheers, Chris

definately could be wheel bearings... also when you put the rotor on the hub did you make sure the mating surface of the hub and the rotor were both clean? this is very important and could certainly cause shuddering if theres somthing between them

you can get green permatex grease for the brake slides from supacheap in a sachet for about $2. works good.
OzJD , no worries, hope it helps.
