Default ABS off light - Error 61

    Hi everyone.

Been a while since I been on here.

I have an issue with the ABS off light coming on once you drive about 5 meters.
I have done the ABS error code retrieval thing and it comes up with error 61 - that is a "Pump motor relay circuit fault" Can anyone give me pointers on how i can diagnose this further or how it is fixed or actually what the hell does it mean ?

I had a similar problem with an older VS i use to have however the brakes work fine and has passed rego with no issues. I want to have it fixed or know more about the problem as I am selling my commodore.

Thank-you in advance happy to exchange help - not very knowledgeable around cars - however can help with computers or xbox 360s

p.s. will post car in for sale thread (97 VS, $3,999) when i get the required posts, have been registered here for 4 years but haven't made made many posts.

Had a similar problem a few months ago. There are two relays in the ABS unit, the pump motor relay and a valve relay. They are interchangeable. I suspected that my problem was that the relay wasn't seating correctly so just swapped them over and the problem went away. You could do the same and if the problem moves to the other valve relay you know that relay is faulty. It took some force to get the relays out. Also they are not the standard blade-type relays as the have circular poles. Instructions below:

Ok so i did this this afternoon and it gives the same fault. I even tried leaving one out then switch the one that was left in over and still got the same error (61).
The ABS off light doesnt come on straight away only when the car begins to move but it never comes on in reverse for some reason only in drive .... :S ?

Should i maybe replace both relays with new ones and see if that makes a difference ? could it be both were stuffed :S ? or the error is coming from somewhere else ?

Ok I just read another post that some users recommended checking the connector to the abs unit thing - so i did and it appears to be corroded ?. It was so corroded that when i unclipped it and pulled the connector off some of the pins snapped off with it and it looks a big greenish :S ? could somehow brake fluid have leaked into it?

I think (correct or reassure me if i am right) that i can just replace the front part of the ABS unit - the front part where the relay 50a fuse thingos go and the connector on top ?? I am going to call the wreckers and hopefully get one.

You can certainly replace just the connector, but you will have to join up the wires somehow, since the other end of the wires that go into the connector go directly into the wiring harness.

Sorry i mean not the actual plug that connects to it but the black front part of the abs module - where all the pins are i think the connector itself is alright.

I was trying to pull the front black part with the relays and everything in it off the one I got from the wreckers and one of the dam screws is threaded and wont undo ahhhhh

Once i get that off I will replace the current one and plug it all back together.

Quite frustrating, if anyone is around Coffs Harbour area and likes getting paid in beer feel free to pm me
