    Default clutch problems

I've just replaced the clutch and pressure plate in my VR, but the peddle still has a lot of play. It feels like there is spring on the clutch peddle that has possibly broken. I'm not sure if the spring is supposed to return the peddle, like the accelerator peddle. If andone has a good ole gregorys manual, or if they can have a feel, it's bloody hard to see up there, and try and tell me how it works. if the spring is in 2 pieces or one.....

Not sure if I've explained it properly or not.... hopefully someone can help... ta.

    Gidday,

    Straight from the Gregory's:

    TO ADJUST CLUTCH PEDAL HEIGHT
    1. Remove the rubber pad from the clutch pedal.
    2. Roll back the floor covering to expose the floor panel in the driver's footwell.
    3. Lightly depress the clutch pedal by hand until resistance from the pressure plate assembly is felt. Hold the poedal in this position.
    4. Measure the distance from the floor panel to the centre of the metal pad on the bottom of the clutch pedal at 90š to the floor panel.
    5. If the above measurement is not within specification (168mm ą5mm), adjust the outer cable nut at the clutch housing until the specified height is obtained.
    6. With the engine idling, operate the clutch and check for correct gear selection.

With your foot off the pedal, there is a return spring in the pedal unit that should return it right up to the top of its stroke. So when you first push the pedal, you're only pushing against this. As it goes down further, you'll feel more resistance as you're now compressing the clutch. If it's working like this, then everything's working okay, if there's lots of play before it takes up, it's just out of adjustment. If the pedal can flop around up the top above where the clutch starts taking up, then maybe the return spring has broken.

    Hope that helps

check out this post Clutch Pedal Spring and VR Clutch Pedal Vibrations The clutch Return spring isn't a return spring like older cars it is actually a preload spring that put pressure on the throwout bearing on the pressure plate fingers.
Without it it is hard to adjust using the method above. It is in one piece and almost impossible to replace because there is so much pressure on it and you have to wind it up so much...no wonder it breaks.
I bought a new one from holden and modified it a bit so it works the same but had nowhere the same pressure put on it.
Its action actually assists the depression of the pedal if that makes sense so as you wind up the travel at the throwout fork the pedal comes closer to the floor.I roughly made mine so it sits beside the brake pedal at rest.

I installed the new spring, was easier to just the peddle and put in the same way. Now because it, as you said, isn't a return spring, wouldn't it cuase the thrust bearing to rub constantly against the fingers on the pressure plate? I ask, because my last pressure plate had major wear on the fingers, as in some were worn about 1/2 way.

Thats how it is designed.....seems a bit stupid but that is how it is no freeplay and the throwout bearing runs constantly against the fingers of the pressure plate even when your foot is off the pedal...you just adjust it for the right pedal height and thats it.When the spring is broken because there is no pressure on the throwout it skips across the fingers of the pressure plate and makes that squeaking noise that you get ..that what mine was....new spring squeal gone...I've read on other posts about the squeal assume its the same thing...broken spring
