Check that the connection to the temp gauge sensor near the thermostat housing is still connected. Is it stuck on zero or full deflection?

Had this problem myself, and has now been fixed by the dealer.
They pulled the dash out, sent all gauges and circuit boards away to be checked for dry joints, found 1 or 2 to do with temp and fuel gauges, fixed them, and they have been going fine since.
    Hope this helps.

If it's stuck on zero it could be either the sensor shorting or as Fred 96 says a dry joint/gauge problem although thumping will usually fix that (temporarily). First check at the sensor end to make sure the connector is connected. Then I'd pull the dash and inspect the printed circuit board and all connections. Make sure you disconnect the battery first!!!! To help you to know what to look for on the circuit board do a GOOGLE search for "dry joints'. Hope this is of help.
Alternatively you can take it to a dealer...but keep your wallet handy and be prepared for it to be a lot thinner when returned.

give the connector on the motor a wiggle back and forth, mine did this once and we fixed it by removing the connector and refitting it. worked perfectly since then

Try replacing the temperature gauge coolant temperature sensor first (very cheap) before you touch the instrument panel. Note that this isn't the coolant temperature sensor. Refer to the attached diagram.

Edit: Sorry, for some reason it won't let me attach the diagram.
