Vr Rebuild, any ideas? (& VIN identification)

Ok, i have as a couple of people may have seen im going to change my VP V^ to a VR V6, before i do this i want to rebuild the engine as dont know the status of it and want to put it in once only without removing it later.
My questions are

1st. A check on the engine number for Year / Model VH1413920

2nd. I will be using this behind a VP V6 Auto with a manual VR wiring loom and ECU. What mods can i do to make the fuel economy better and if possible make the motor little more power as its going in a 4wd but economy is more important as i drive over 100k to work and back daily.

I dont mind buying new pistons, camshaft etc. If its costs $200 for a cam but saves me $1000 over 6mths im happy to do that.

The engine number you have was put into a car around Aug 1994.

July 93 VH1326500 (approx start VR's)
Aug 94 VH1413589
Sep 94 VH1420000
Mar 95 VH1471800 (approx finish VR's)
