1- the badges (215i badge)
2- the engine covers (dark grey with 215i badge)
3- the build plate/engine numbers, owners manual and you can check with hsv clubs and so on.
how can you tell the differrance between a 185i and the 215i?
is there anyway to tell between engine numbers ?

yeah engine covers and badges are very easily changed
im buyin a shmicko vp exec with a 215i bottom end with a vp ss inlet top end
im buying it off a mechanic that works at holden very honest bloke
he reckons hes chased it up and cant prove i know one way to prove it but i dont think hell like me checkin the crank lol
i do have the engine numbers but vu613476
Is it a original hsv motor or a holden block with a strocker crank?
You'd have to try hsv dealer or a club they generally have lists on car vin/engine numbers.

If your just looking at the car, and its manual, the 215 will have the 6 speed, and the 185 will have the 5 speed.
The console will reflect this, 5 speeds have normal exec console (but the inner is black, not grey) and the 6 speeds have the calais/statesman style centre console.
I've also noticed that ALL 215s have the HSV 250k dash, and i've personally never seen a 185 with it, but theres other people on here who have seen them (either changed or thats how they are optioned). So if it has the 220k speedo, its def a 185.
Edit - oh lol, just realised you only meant the engine, forget about this

A HSV dealer or HSV's customer service line should be able to give you more information regarding its build based on the build number of the car.
They would have records of what the car was sold as, where as they may not know what an individual engine was built as...
Just a thought
