Hey guy's, im iterested in buying a VR Caprice. it is mechanically sound, but the gear box has problems.
My V6 Wagon has a new box in it. and im wanting to transfer the box into the Caprice........
I know it wont be as strong. but can i do it ??????????
what will i need to do it???????????
thanks guys
Way too much rooting around and pieces to change to make it worth while. Easiest and cheapest way is to get the box that was designed for the car.

I thought both boxes were the same. I could be wrong though.
A friend is going to pull the box out of a VS V6 and put it on his 5.0 VS. So I am not sure.

don't think the bellhousing will fit..
There is no such thing as stupid questions, Only stupid people.
So the auto boxes are the same but I do know the manuals are actually different.

new bell housings will be the first thing, then the spline and the ratios are slightly different i beleive and the strength from what iv heard is less. It can be done with the right parts to swap things around but its a bit of rooting around by the sounds of it. Better off selling the V6 box and buying an 8 box
Are you guys talking bout the auto or the manual box here ??
I know the Manual is different but I thought the auto was pretty much the same.
I assume the OP is talking about an auto cause its a caprice but can someone clarify if the autos are the same or different and if the autos are different what needs to be modified or changed to fit.
As said By kez i have a V8 with a stuffed box and a donor car with a V6 auto with low K's and getting it for free so i want to just swap them over.
Cheers guys
Assuming we are talking about a manual gearbox, it can be done, but as already said will be alot of mucking around. To fit the v6 T5 box to a v8 you will need a v8 bellhousing, a v8 clutch fork, a v8 clutch cable and the splined input shaft on the gearbox will have to be shortened by approx 50mm. If the caprice is an auto you'll also need a manual ecu, wiring harness and the front yoke on the tailshaft is different too. I think thats the majority of the differences.
V6 and V8 engines have different bolt patterns for the bellhousing. the V8 uses the chev turbo pattern and the V6 (3800/ecotec, not sure about alloytec) use a buick pattern for the bellhousing. so in short, to change a transmission from a V6 to a V8 you are going to have to change the bellhousing at the very least

So does anyone know if the auto in he V8 & the V6 are the same ??
