it's a long read but please gimmie a hand here.
Hi guys,
so since i've owned my VR its always had a starting problem.
It will wind over and over and over and over alot of times before firing up (for about 15secs). then sometimes it will run like a pig & stall on me.
then i'll fire it up again and give it some juice (bring it above 2000rpm). and it'll run fine like a normal cold start. ALSO you can smell unburnt Fuel. strong smell of it on start up..
also after depressureising the fuel system, it will start Perfect. thats why i thought leaky injector.
unplugging injector on rear passenger side will mke it start a bit better. but not much. might just be a imagination thing.
So far i've been told it could be:
Battery
Leaky injectors
ECU
Fuel regulator
i have just finished changing the two injectors i though were leaking (with second hand ones).
i am about to change the ECU with a spare i have.
and i also have a 2nd hand regulator im gonna try in it tomoz.
has anyone evr had this problem?.......does anybody know what could cause this??...
any questions are fine people, please help!
thanks
Hi there, not 100 % sure but maybe vacuum leak? mine does the same thing and when i checked the codes the error code for vacuum leak comes up. I cant find the leak but if i can and it fixes the problem i will let you know. Mine also idles rough/low and very occationally will stall at idle
also if you find the problem with yours can you post it so i can try it on mine![]()
could be the coolant temp sensor
I tune the oldschool way fear on the passengers face and knuckle colour cant go wrong

i'll just go check
check back in 2 mins
the coolant sensor tells the ecu how much fuel to spray in so if its getting stuffed it will give it too much.ide pull the vacuam hose for the fuel reg off and make sure no fuel comes out of it and check all the injectors for leaks you can lift them all out connected to the fuel rail and power up the pump to check

ok no error codes but i havnt taken it for a big drive since reconnecting the battery. only to the shops...i'll check te vacumm hose now
ok the Vacumm hose that comes off the regulator to te throttle body.
it had some fuel in that line. is this bad?......does it mean new regulator?
yip regulator is stuffed change that and shell be all good i bet

For a VS (different to a VR), I was quoted $270 for a Genuine Holden part. Bosch aftermarket seem to range from $110-$150.
I can only assume that VR prices will be similar
ok thanks guy's. i'll pick one up tommorrow.
also would this be causing my car to drink more. cause i have been experiencing high consumption lately. about 80k's a quarter.
yip she will be far sucking the fuel in mate.

thanks buddy, you've been a great help. thanks to everyone else to.
if your gunna be doing your fuel system mate, better check fuel filter, fuel pump, charcol canister etc...
all these things can obstruct good fuel flow...
good luck mate!
ok thanks mate. where is the charcol canister?....and how do i check if it's working properly??
Hey guys, i had the same problem with my VR. Trying to start the car, it would kick over fine but the engine wouldnt catch. It was as if there was no fuel getting to the motor.
I got in contact with the person i bought it off and they said get under the back of the car and jiggle the wires around the fuel pump.
Im not too savvy with cars, but there was this little white cylinder looking fuse thing with wires coming out both ends, she said jiggle those and make sure they are in and try starting the car again. hey presto it works but id rather not have to go through that everytime.
Any ideas on what i should do?
Cheers
MM
What you are referring to here is the fuel sender unit. Im not real experienced. This is just general knowledge i have acquired using this forum.Im not too savvy with cars, but there was this little white cylinder looking fuse thing with wires coming out both ends, she said jiggle those and make sure they are in and try starting the car again. hey presto it works but id rather not have to go through that everytime.
But many people have problems with their fuel system. Either the pump fails, sender unit dies etc.
Personally, My VR is fine until i fill it full of juice. She doesnt fire after that. So obviously its something internally wrong inside the fuel tank.?
To answer your question for people that may have the same problem. Usually replacing the fuel sender unit can fix the problem. Replacing the lines you were jiggling as they may be clogged.
Jake.
My VR did this to me once after i installed a new throttle body, sounds like what yours is doing and it was just the vacum hose wasnt hardly on, went fine after that.
