Default engine light and "limp" mode

hi fellas. i've got a vs auto 5.0L ute and recently ive noticed my engine light coming on now and again. it seems to put the car in a "limp" mode and restricts it to second gear. turning the car off and on again a few times seems to fix the problem temporarily. im guessing its a sensor thats playing up?? so where abouts is the computer and how can you test it for fault codes? am i on the right track? thanks guys. any help appreciated.

My VR v6 went into limp mode on Saturday. Have a look at this link Checking error codes VR/VS (Revised)
I tried mine, turned out to be code 75. Good luck.

its in the rear housing of the transmission on the passenger side check the plug for it under the car may be full of crud or coming unplugged or it may need a new sensor the auto wont go properly without the speed pulses from it.
I tune the oldschool way fear on the passengers face and knuckle colour cant go wrong
