well the story goes. last monday afternoon i drove past this vs ute for sale. and saw this ute has potential. after checking it out further it was a series 3 manual. so i spoke with the bloke and it had been a water damaged repairable write off. so i decided id buy it and see how i go.
picked the ute up on friday morning and it was thick with brown sludge all over the car. i pressure washed it and then washed it with a sponge. and the paint come up pretty well then proceeded to pull the interior to pieces and its apparent ill need to replace the body loom as the water has affected alot of the wiring.
after speaking with dan he said we could put the l67 into the ute. so the following afternoon we decided it was time to get cracking and pull the l67 out of the wreck out the back. saturday night saw us with the motor and box out and the auto box disconnected.
sunday morning pulled all the bits and pieces off the ute and made way for the engine to come out of the ute which was seized from when the ute obviously went for a swim, hence the name "beached az".
sunday night we have the ecotec out and the getrag disconnected.
now all thats left to do is refit the l67 and getrag to the ute replacing bits and pieces as we go.

Sooooooo beached! Lol we found sand in between the chassis and gearbox x-member...
This is gonna be a mad car to drive when its done man, looking forward to helping ya more with it!
well today i phoned up a few places about some replacement parts that im going to need as the car the l67 came from was involved in a front end collision, and began to write a list of the bits and pieces i need to gather before putting it all back together.
i also confirmed that there was no water in the gearbox oilso the gearbox should be fine i also didnt find metal shavings on the magnetic drain plug which is a plus.
here goes with the list of things the car needs and ill tick them off as i get them
tail lights - ordered from sss auto parts
fuel filter
air filter
oil/filter
spark plugs
supercharger and accesories belts
engine mounts
gearbox/diff oil
2 pulley and tensioner - ordered from mc grath holden
new bcm, ignition barrel and door lock as i didnt get a key with the car.
thats what ive thought of so far.
lol nice fun project mate. How many bloody cars you got now haha?
another day another update.
ive been keeping a tab on the things i need to buy and trying to find some others.
today i found a place that sells truck and bus hinges and locks etc. and they had the locks that suit the hard lid on the ute so i now have the locks and keys to suit.
work on it today went as far as spraying the seats with wd40 to get them to budge. and they are now out.
it looks like the ute has a sub in next to the fuel tank. as there is wiring running through the port behind the passenger seat.
your coming to the ute side. Looks like alot of fun and +1 for the stato front end/interior
It would just suit Haydz so much, The amount of stato/caprices his had/got lol.
haha thats what i told him to do as well!
Priority though is to get the thing all back in one piece and fully functioning and then get it registered...
PS you better still do it though haydz![]()
hmm stato front end i hear you say. im not really keen on it to be honest. im preferring something a bit more sporty looking for the ute.
haha dan youd think the priority was getting it running but i havent really touched that side of things all week.
maybe stato dash but that will depend on how much wiring i have to replace. if i have to change the whole body loom ill definitely get a stato dash and add on the bits that look best from there on in.
todays progress.
i pulled off the hard lid and removed the hard plastic tubliner. then pulled off the fuel cover and found a sub box sitting next to the fuel tank although it had been water affected and was all mushy. that was binned but the subs may be ok?
never heard of the brand. but aparently they are american made
the previous owner had removed the blanking covers and replaced them with speaker grilles that ported thru to the subs.
i picked up a steering wheel and boss kit too
and also some autotechnica seats
and here is a picture of the replacement locks for the hard lid

looking awesome haydz! definately some progress made! are those the seats u were watching on ebay? what did u end up getting them for? Trust me they'll be the best funtional mod you can do for the interior! Although it looks like the handle at the front of the seat for the sliders is on upside down lol...
Start cleaning the motor up dude!
lookn good mate, i rcn u should go for the clean look ute, rip those red stripes of, debadge and some nice simple rims.
im watching this spot![]()
Nice.. LOL
If you guys need a hand with this car just give me a yell and i might be free to lend a hand..
You going to make it a sleeper or an out there power maker?
thanks jack.
its not meant to look good. its being build for practicality ie to tow my motorbike and caravan ( a task that the caprice can only do if there are a) no speed humps b) no unsealed roads)
and it only happened to get a super 6 as thats what we had a spare one of.
i got a whole bunch of parts today
- BCM,Keyhead and ignition barrel/lock
- Air Filter
- Oil Filter
- Fuel Filter
- Engine Mounts
- Thrust Bearing
- Spark Plugs
- Full Synthetic Gearbox oil
still need a few more bits but that was the bulk of it. i also got the flywheel mounted to the motor but tried and failed to get the pressure plate and clutch disc on properly. i need to obtain a clutch aligning tool do this.
broom handle mate the old wooden ones work everytime as long it the right size that is what i used on my falcon,vp and vh
thanks vr acclaim i tried that but no luck. its a bit of a mission of a job to do on your own. especially with the motor on an engine crane.
robbo. yeah its in good nic. just going to get it re painted as its faded a little. also planning to get some sideskirts painted at the same time.
i also took the ignition barrel and key to the locksmiths and got them to change it over. now its ready to bolt in.
the fuel tank is now clean also. and i swapped the super 6 pump onto the ute sender. time to put the tank back in. just waiting on some new breather lines.
also went and ordered the belts from cbc and they will be arriving tomorrow morning.
no pictures as its not very interesting. but hopefully this weekend will see at least one interesting update.
small update.
spent half a day working on bits and pieces today.
installed the new bcm and ignition barrel
removed the front bumper and headlights and prepared the engine bay to have the motor installed tomorrow
bolted the engine and gearbox together then cleaned them and installed new engine mounts.

hahah nice man! Gota luv the good old seatbelts lol.I see no extractors though? Ya going to later down the track after she's sorted out and running yeah?
Its about time for an update.
The motor is in and running although i had to pull the gearbox back off because the flywheel didnt go on correctly and was making it vibrate like crazy.
thats in the pipeline of getting fixed at the moment.
also pulled off the towbar. and gave it a bit of a paint. thats ready to go back on now. just waiting for someone to be here again to give me a hand ( thanks dan)
id just like to say a big thanks to dan actually, without his help this wouldnt of gotten off the ground so quick. i mean for me anyway. its all going along as the money flows but still in my eyes its a been a pretty quick turn of events.

slowly getting there bit by bit.
Nice job dude! what are the bigger plans for it?
it was really a coincidence that i even bought the thing. i saw it for sale on the side of a local road and thought aw yeah black ute. might have a geez. looked over it was pretty straight then went hang on this is a series 3 oh and an s pac (LSD) oh and its a getrag manual id be thick to pass this up for the money.
and had no real use for it if im honest but i convinced myself that it can be my new daily and ill sell my festiva. and it will also come in handy to tow the motorbike/caravan etc which im planning on taking out alot more of as i get older.
i dont have a fixed direction in which i want it to go. but itll be mainly practicallity and a bit of performance for good measure
No worries at all bro! It's been mad fun! It helps that its all fresh in our minds from doing my car, and as a result it has been a heaps quick process!
What have you worked out with the flywheel, need it rebalanced? Got a new spigot bush yet? Have u got the clutch master yet?
Go up the road and swap those end caps!
Seeya saturday dude, cant wait!
