So beware irs drivers according to the guy that fixed it, this can happen every 10 years and most torquey manual cars with irs instead of the proper multilink. cost over a grand to fix.
This happened to my GTS not to long ago. Got a rear diff cradle from auto salvage for $90 and installed it myself. Took me about 10 hours or so just plotting along at it but $90 is much better than $1000.

    Nice car btw.

It's a hydratrak diff, and it's now fine. No problems at all. But it did the exact same thing, reversed into my drive. when I went to leave. did not go anywhere. Sucked so bad. After I bolted the replacement cradle in I had no problems at all. What I found strange though is that while the drive shaft was out. Shouldn't it have still moved the car being a LSD? I jacked it up and the 1 wheel still worked fine. Yet when it was on the ground. Car would not move. Meh It's all good now anyway, not complaining

If the pinion gear came away from the ring gear in the diff then no tires will spin which is what happened to mine, imagine if it cracked while we were driving!

Also mine had a roadworthy check on a hoist by a cop and a mechanic changed my springs a few months before it happened and they didnt pick anything up.

To be honest I missed it at first, When the shaft was out I was thinking??? WTF how did that happen. Only Until I posted it on this website people told me to check my cradle. Then I saw the split and was like.... Oh F*^#. LOL Hard to see untill you look closer above the drive shaft.

It actually ended up being the pinion flange that was causing the diff oil leak and there was a noise caused by loose bolts that connected the driveshaft to the flange! got it fixed for $150 including top up of diff oil and underneath of the car cleaned as the diff oil was sprayed everywhere. LSD is still worn out though.

Thanks for checking up on it
