My 1993 VR Commodore Restore.
Hi guys as of yesterday I have taken ownership of my older sisters VR Commodore sedan I didn't have time to take before shots of the car as I had to drop it of to my mechanic's to have the engine changed as the current engine has developed the dreaded engine knock in the rear of the engine. When I get the car back I will take pics before I do anything else. I have been ordering allot of parts off ebay for the car in the next few months.
I only intend to restore the car back to it's more or less stock look as at the moment it's just plain grubby inside and out due to were my sister works in the middle of farms in Werribee and been driven up and down the highway from Geelong to Werribee.
I won't get the car back for around 2 to 3 weeks as 1. I am in no rush and 2. I don't want to push either the wrecker or mechanic so hence I am getting a cheaper price on both.

Ok here are some images I wanted to take them before I took it to the car wash but I forgot as you can see they have started work on it already to get it ready for the new engine.
The engine is a reco and it's only done about 120000k's and it has the big end bearing clonk going on there not worth the money these days.

Nice plans mate, I'll be keeping an eye out to see how you progress. I've done some similar mods, not the engine swap though. Did you buy the grills from a dealership? How hard are they to fit? and what did they cost, if you don't mind me asking. So glad you're swapping those lights haha. You should hit up MACE for some goodies while the motors being done :P
I brought the chrome grills of ebay for around $63 for the set genuine Holden parts. Allot of the parts so far have been off ebay as well.Originally Posted by F l a k

Doesn't look grubby at all mate! How many k's on the original engine? Will look so much tidier with the genuine tail lights!
The engine that is in there now about 120000k's or less. I had just taken the VR to the car wash and gave it a rough scrub down it was looking brown and looks a little brown inside from dust.
The paint is still good it needs a good cut & polish just a complete detail inside and out to get it back up to my standard.
I have now ordered chrome strips for the front and rear bars and will be getting some for the side as well.
I am also tracking down the chrome trimming for around the windows.
Looks like it came up good with a wash.
You got some sensible mods going on/planned, will you be replacing the motor with another Buick V6, or going for something different?

With another low k buick V6 engine and I did the sensible thing but going to look at the engine while it was still in the car and checked the service history all checked out ok.

Today in the post I got me new bonnet & boot badges.
And last night I won on eBay the chrome trim that goes around the windows for only $61 R VS COMMODORE CHROME WINDOW TRIMS SS HSV CALAIS Also when I arrived to pick them up the guy didn't seem to be happy and he also found the inside chrome trim that goes with it that I knew nothing about bouns.
I am also now getting a reco steering rack and a new fuel pump as well.

How much did the badges cost? and did they come with something to stick them on?
Badges were about $30 each and they are genuine holden and they have 3M tape.Looking good so far! Hope to see upcoming updates!

Ok todays update is that the engine is now out of the car as we were expecting the replacement engine today and it was a no show was not happy with the wrecker I know I told him to take his time there's no rush but man that was like 2 weeks ago. Well anyway the reco steering rack did arrive and was installed asap and we are now waiting on the new engine mounts.

Sucks about the engine no show but still seems like some decent progress. Are you gonna do the gaskets (inlet manifold, rocker covers etc) while this is being done? What about detailing the bay while it's empty?
hey mate im looking at pulling the engine out of my ute in december for some repair work and also to fix melted wiring and clean the engine bay, just wondering how hard or easy it was to pull the engine out?, ive pulled out a v8 on a monaro but i think theres a bit more to it when doing it to these motors.
There's already been cleaning in the engine bay but I can't ask him to fully clean it as that will mean more money he will want.
I was going to do it myself but due to my arthritis I can't but it is easy to get a motor in and out of a VR / VS Commodore.
If you don't mind me asking, how much did the reco steering rack set you back ?
The reco steering rack has set me back $400 supplied & fitted other places in Geelong were wanting $480 just to supply the rack so my mate has done a call around and supplied me one from Melbourne.
The new engine is out and ready for transport

This engine has not been cleaned what so ever the car it came out of was a low k car and in excellent condition.

Wow I can't believe that engine hasn't been cleaned lol, it's immaculate. Nice find.
Thanks guys more updates will follow over the next few days and with any hope I will have the VR back home by Friday.
