    Default Vs executive 1996 ECOTEC

    Hi all

I snapped some picutures of my ride, here it a short blurb about her.

I bought this car back in August last year for $2500. It belonged to my dads work mate and he loved the shit outta it. It came completely grandpa spec, the only mods were red stripes on the engine cover ( and a stage something shift kit!!). before that it was owned by an old guy who towed a boat with it. thats why it had the shift kit, that was installed with the trans recon.

    Stuff I have done.
    -custom CAI
    -9mm leads
    -Memcal
    -mags
    -lowerd
-sounds (two twelves and sound stream components in the front doors amped)
    -fog lamps
    -removed cat
    -Manual converted.

    Plans for it are.
    -plenum and manifold spacers
    -mild cam
    -bigger sway bars
    -extractors
-exhuast 2.5in - unsure, maybe stick with 2in with performace mufflers. 2.5in with cam yeh
-larger throttle body and larger MAF sensor - Dont think so now
    - I should stop now

Coming from a family who owns a Camaro and 2 Monaros.....It made sense to buy a Holden and not a ford.

Maybe slow down for corners and roundabouts?

It does look nice and clean, but i dont understand what mod "memcal" is, i dont see any mods requiring a tune :/

Thats the thing, you didnt have to go fast to make it do that lol (shocks were puckaroo)

Memcal, yeh not mods requiring it but its firmed up the shifts, change shift points and advanced the ignition timing. it also accents the shift kit nicely. I must find out whats been done to the trans, I figure its just the basic kit (not the switch lol)

Check your bushings first, some could be flogged out causing more body roll. I use to have country pack springs, body roll was scary. Bringing the height down helped this problem.
As for the shift kit, could just be the shift improver kit? Thats the biggest thing i hate about buying second hand cars, you dont know whats done or its history.

Just a thought, may not fit your budget, but since your going a cam (which requires head components as well) is getting another motor and build that one up. That way you can either do a full rebuild and build it up slowly without the car being off the road. Just a thought.

    Great minds think alike!

Finacally at the moment no lol but some day. I know the last owner so I know the cars history well. The guy wasnt knowlegable with cars but I do know when the auto trans was rebuilt the clutch packs have more plates and the kit.

All bushes are brand new nolathane!!

If you seen them front on you would probly change your mind. I would like to see a pic of those fogs you are on about, are they like the ones on your car?

    Update.

Went to the Four and rotor nats this weekend then up to whangarei and back home to tauranga. was a great drive, even though my pissed mates in the back were being noisy and needing to constantly urinate!! car went strong, haulled ass up the kaimais well.

Just though i would add in some pic of when I first got the car (4x4 spec lol)

    When I lowered it.

    Got rear ended today...........

damage isnt too bad, just a new rear bumber and straighten the tow bar. Just some cracks and some paint got lost, but man that little telstar got owned! Whole front end got rammed in and was gushing coolent everywhere.

Good news is he had insurance and my bumper had a scratch for when i reversed over grannys wheel barrow a few months ago. Might post a pic but not really much to look at, really kicking myself i diddnt snap a pic of his car.

Haha, thanks mate. yeh I climbed under the car today and it appears only the plastic bumper is damaged

Lol I think my exhaust pipe went though his radiator, but I feel sorry for him. he was following me for a while and I could tell he was in a hurry. He was heading home to get changed and go to Auckland to pick someone up from the airport. He has another car though, that was just his run around. his other car is a commodore!

Here is my finished rims, I decided to take off the black paint too. I think it looks better.

    Big service this week

    : oil/filter
    :fuel filter
    :tyres (rears lol)
    :Brake rotors

My oil was utterly disgusting, I want to change it a while ago but money wasnt there. 11000K's between services I dont want to do too many of those in the future. Fuel filter was the most fun. Seeing as i was working under the car with it on axle stands I thought I would de-pressurise the fuel system. i unplugged the fuel pump, then started the car. it idled for 5 seconds and died. so I climbed under and pulled the filter off and got a reasonable amount of fuel on my face and in my eyes, the fuel was still under about 10psi and pissed everywhere...... after I rinsed my eyes and washed my face I removed the filter still keeping the filter full of petrol and tipped it into a jam jar out the input side of the filter, for educational purposes. Man I couldn't believe the amount of dirt....
I got some second hand rear tyres. The guy said $150 fitted. I said bugger I wasnt born yesterday, I can buy new ones for that much! He then explained that was for the pair lol Im happy they are A-symmetrical so I can swap them over when the drivers side tyre wears
Then i got so nice Brembo brake rotors, not slotted or anything. $109 each, that was at BNT. Repco wanted $120+ for some other ones and they diddnt even know what size I needed! I began fitting them today but it started to rain and I couldn't get them off. I tend to hammer first ask questions later ( I worked in a tractor workshop ) But turns out I was right lol Sounds like hubs are dear though so I wont go too crazy! I didnt get new pads because the reason Im replacing the rotors is because I machined them but left hand side went under tolerances and sings strange songs to my when I brake hard or go down long hills! I put in new pads when i machined them, I will give them a quick scuff on the concrete for good measure.

So now shes all ready to go for a year of polytech (same as TAFE, more or less) doing second year automotive.
