Default So i went from a sports exhast to a stock system

My car failed roadworthy, the exhaust system it had on it was too loud, so i was forced to get it replaced with a stock exhaust system and muffler, (i could only afford the stock one) and the difference in how it sounds is amazing, i could barely hear the engine while i was driving, but when i had the sorts exhaust people could hear me coming from blocks away, now every time i start my car (until i can pass road worthy, get my car registered and pay for a new exhaust system) i die a little inside.

    and????

Was it defected or was it just going for a roady?
Mines completly roadworthy and I have a 2.5" sports system.
I also have a resi and rear muffler to keep it quiet

Its legal to have a sports system aslong as you do two things..
    1. Have all the polution gear and muflers ect...
    2. Have a leaking stock exhaust and need it to be replaced.

If my 2.5" exhaust was as quiet as stock I would be in heaven, but it needed the extra power!
Its worth sacrificing quietness for a bit of power IMO.

^^^agreed. I don't see why you would want people to hear you coming from a mile away. All you do is piss off the neighbours every time you start your car. You don't look cool, and it probably doesnt sound fast or powerful

x3. Shits the neighbours off, shits the animals in the street off and generally makes a person look like a ********. Stick to the stock system unless you can find and afford one that sounds nice without being obnoxious.

Exactly, if you want a rumble and power get a V8. not a v6 with an exhaust.

I had a 3" sports system, with the muffler to suit, giving the neighbors hell doesn't phase me, and my v6 with 3" sports system sounded harder then any v8 i have heard.

a V8 with a 2.5" exhaust sounds fairly nice. but no wonder it got defected 3" exhaust LOL.

I definately have to hear this! A stock v6 (isnt it?) with an oversized exhaust that not only doesn't drone, but actually sounds good....and better than a worked V8!

+1 on that philthy. every v6 ive herd with a "catback" sounds shit. you will never get a holden v6 to soudn any good no matter what you do simply because of the way the firing order is. same with the 5l vs the LSX engines they sound completly differnt due to the new "refined" firing orders

the only 6 that sound good unfortunally are the F6's

Just record a 350 exhaust. Then stick it on loop in ur v6 stereo. Get all ur mates to sit in the car if you want them to hear the exhaust.

i never said it was worked v8, just a standard V8 with little or no exhaust mods. and define what you call stock.

    ...?

And by the way, i'm not going to argue with you guys, i have been in v6's and v8's both worked and stock, and i know the difference in power and sound, i'm just saying i didn't know the difference between a stock system and a 3" sports system would be so dramatic, and anyone wondering if they should go a sports system in their car, i would say go for it.

You said it sounded better than "harder than any v8 you have ever heard", and I just assumed you had (at least in passing, or on youtube etc) heard a worked v8, like a car should sound. If not, then you really aren't qualified to be judging what sounds "good".

EDIT: Apparently you have been in worked v8s, yet you still claim yours to be better?

but you did say worked v8, as you said it sounded better than ANY v8 youve heard. since you have been in a worked v8, that must include those

Im sitting on the fence here.
    I myself drive a vt v6
Its quiet loud having full exhaust system and also being cammed and for a 6 its sound quiet rrespetable.
I wouldnt say its obnoxious or anything but it is noticebale.
I do hate going out on weekends when im designated driver cause i always feel bad driving through the small streets 3 in the morning.
I try to drive it as quiet as possible but my friend told me he hears my car all way up end of street which didnt make me feel any better..
I just think its the people that roar through the streets at that time that are the problem...

Excuse me? i work up to 50 hours a week, I get up at 5 a.m., yeah my '98 could be considered old, but for an 18 year old i think it's a great start. it isn't un-roadworthy anymore, that's the reason for this thread, why such hostility, I just posted a topic about changing exhaust systems and the dramatic difference in tone it can make ( I'ts obvious it's a major factor when it comes to sound output. ) But i was surprised about the massive difference.

By the way; you have "vl" in your user-name, so it's fair to assume you drive a VL, i know VL's rock hard, but are older, then my "ridiculous sounding un-roadworthy old commodore."

When I get my old system put back on, i'll use a high quality video camera ( cheaper ones don't usually have good sound recording capabilities, and you can be the judges.

    Thanks.

You are putting the old system back on? Why would you deliberately go and make your car unroadworthy?
And I know you don't care about your neighbours, but I'm surprised you haven't had your car egged or keyed for waking them up at 5am every morning

I'm getting a system similar to the old one, and where i live it's 40km/h for about 1/km strait road, and i barely hit 1,500 RPM, even with the 3" system it went loud, but it was controllable, when i said i don't care about the neighbors, i meant it in a way i will tear through neighborhoods at appropriate times ( if there is any ) but will go out of my way to try to make my car quiet as possible at times when people are trying to sleep, god, i;m not that ignorant. egged or keyed? love to see them try.
