Exclamation Air Bag Light Stays On

    Hey.

The airbag light stays on for a while when I first start the engine in my 2000 VX S Pack Manual Commodore. I have taken it to a mechanic and he scanned it with the tool, and no errors appeared. He reckons I might need to replace the airbag module. The light doesn't come on when you turn the car off and then back on like 10 mins later. (eg turn car off, go into shops, come back start the engine and it's not there.) Could that be the reason he didn't pick up any errors?

I've read up about them and they are not cheap.

Just wondering if it's worth taking to Holden to see what they can do and whether they can help me.

    Cheers,
    Chris.

there is some sort of fault i had a friend with this problem they took it to holden and they replaced a wire, i think it was a common fault or something as it was free. but many will charge.

I had the problem of the light staying on on the dash. Turns out it was the clock spring snapped in the steering column (very common over time). Cost nearly $400 to get fixed because they have to remove the airbag to fix it, and scan the computer for the fault.

A bit expensive, 4 screws and a connector and the airbag is removed, a 5 minute job at most.

So what do you recommend? Take it into Holden to source the problem and then when the problem is identified, buy the part number and take it to the local mechanic? Might turn out a bit cheaper.

Yeah, but i think it had something to do with having to be very careful removing it because it could deploy if you're not careful.

First step to remove airbag without deployment .
Step 1. Remove NEGATIVE battery terminal. wait 1 minute before proceeding.
the reason is that the Airbag system is still active for up to 1 minute after the battery is disconnected. also when handling the airbag no not face the airbag towards yourself. eg Holden logo away from your body.

I took it to a mechanic and he scanned it and he said no errors came up. Could this be because the light only goes off when I first start the car, and the car was driven into him?

How long does the light stay on and do you get the chimes as well?

as above if the car does not chime like you have left the handbrake on then its just normal. if it does chime you know there is something wrong as there should be a code if it does chime and no code there is wiring fault most probably.

It does chime about 3 times and then it goes off. This only happens when I first start the car. eg if I go to the shops and come back to the car and start it up it doesn't happen.

I think it should register a code but I don't think the code is logged in the engine computer, but in the airbag computer or monitor. Your best bet would be to go to Holden since they have the necessary equipment to find the fault.

Default Airbag light and chime = fault

The Codes are logged in the airbag module.specialist Equipment is required to diagnose airbag faults as they are specific faults to the airbag unit.
i would be careful whilst driving and take the car to a holden dealer as soon as possible, as if the chimes come on it means there is a fault, but its an intermittent fault so its probably a faulty ground or faulty connection somewhere.

Also, I've noticed that the colder it is, the more times it beeps and the longer the light stays on.

what i hear is that when the light comes on then the chimes start the air module is do a self diagnostic check on the system and if the airbag light stays on then there is a fault within the airbag/system thats from a sparky i know
