i have just changed new engine oil, head gasket, oil filter, head gasket, valve seal, cleaned up cylinder head, rod, valve train etc .
now i am hving little problem which is rattling sound at cold start especially at night or morning when its very cold temperature but disappear after few seconds
so is this normal??
what engine oil are you using?
vxl branded oil with 20 50 grade
thanks, I usually use shell branded oil with 10w30 grade and got this engine oil (gulf western oil 20 50 ) recommended by person at the shop because it was cheap.
anyway so which oil grade are best for this engine, i might replace the oil tomorrow see how it goes
Would help to know what engine it is, and how many kms?

i use gtx 3 in the winter and gtx 2 in the summer. gtx 3 is 15w 40. about 25 bucks. my car has done 450k and i service every 5k religiously.
thx guys,, i would try gtx3.
Mobil 1 maybe too dear for me at the moment because i have already spent more than $500 to the car since last week
its ecotec 3.8 v6 engine and has done 280k's
got myself mobil1 15w 40 grade
however engine still rattling at cold start![]()
check my video thanks if you can notice the slight tapping coming from the engine
note: the engine wasnt really cold at the time i made this video so i would post another one tomorrow when the engine is really cold
i dont feel any decrease in power and it seems running fine and smooth as i drive it to the highway everyday
YouTube - commodore engine tapping noise
hehe i agree with you
thanks guys, well it was sounded worse and louder when the engine oil mixed with water
so if you think this is lifter noise
do i have to replace the whole valve train such as push rod, valve or just a lifter ?
also what really pissed me off is that i spent 38 bucks for coolant, now i have to waste it coz i m going to remove the lifter and replace if thats the case
oil mixed with the water?
anyway i went to holden part department the other day that they recommended me a whole set new valve lifters but they also said it still be alright and considered normal if the rattle goes away after engine is warm unless the rattle doesnt stop then it has to be replace
i have just replace whole set of gasket to it so i have already fixed that problem
if it goes away once its warmed up or after a 30seconds or so i wouldnt worry about it, but if it continues like holden said then i would replace them
had the same problem, run Nulon Lifter Free Through for 2 weeks then dump the oil and renew the oil. with some good quality stuff like mobil 1 or Castrol GTX III
if it happens again i would look at new lifters.

i went to the auto part thinking to replace the lifter today then again this guys recommended me not to because its waste of money and it sounds normal for high k's holden engine so instead they gave me another engine oil 10w30 to try well the noise slightly gone but i still feeling paranoid that the rattle still there lol
seriously this issue hasn't really effected my car performance but it does effecting my tolerance level
it sounds like a sticky lifter try a lifter free...
There is no such thing as stupid questions, Only stupid people.
To be honest, that does sound like an average high kms Ecotec, I wouldn't be too worried about it randomly exploding or anything.
The lifter treatment some of the guys have suggested might solve your problem, it's cheap and easy to try at any rate.
If it were me I'd be running a 20w50 in an engine with 280,000kms on it. 10w30 is quite thin, and would have been Ok when the engine was new, but by now it'd probably benefit from a thicker oil. I've found the Shell high-milage stuff to be good in those motors, but any of the big name brands should be alright. It's not something you'd need to run off and do, but when the next oil change comes around it's what I'd recommend. I would also say that if you are doing regular changes at 5,000kms, that you needn't worry about using synthetic oil (there's no harm if you do, but you won't gain much from it).

I tried an engine flush, tried lifter treatment, changed oils and it still does it. I even pulled the old lifters out and put new ones in ($200 from CamTech) and it has'nt fixed the prob. I still can't figure it out!
If its not working, you're not hitting it hard enough.
