fuel sender/trip computer says empty and dashes

like a day or two after i got the 220k service notice on the screen of the dash, i noticed i seemed to have a lot less left in the tank than usual (30ks left) and i actually had say about 180ks left in the tank. then the needle went to rock bottom on the guage and the dash just had four dashes eg

its been a few days and i thought it may have stopped if i fueled her a bit more, but didnt do anything, now im thinking about disconnecting the battery and to see whether anything will happen

anyone been in the same situation? it seems like its designed to fall apart after the 220k mark

My VT has done well over 220k and the gauge and dash reading still work fine.

anyone know if the sender is stuffed?
ive heard the fuel cools it so if u run low on fuel for a while it doesnt do it much good
