Default Purchasing New VT, Need Suggestions

    Hi,

I am looking to purchase my first commodore.

Its a '98 VT Series 1 Berlina Commodore.

The asking price is $4750, plus its does need a little work.

Is this a reasonable price for a car of this age? By the way, it has around 250k on it.

    Thanks

    J

Depends what the "Little Work" it requires is. Got any information on that?

Requires work on the Power Steering, replace Pump and Rack
may need Radius Rod Bushes replaced soon (they're starting to crack)
    New Engine mounts
Engine is leaking a little oil, need to have Tappet, Inlet Manifold and Rear main checked to find source of leak.

I got this from an NRMA check done today. Also needs new tyres

For the trouble, I don't think that price is worth it. I'd try to bargain him down to $4k if I were you

That;s pretty much exactly what I was looking for! So you think $4k is a reasonable price, considering the work that needs to be done!

She has a few Ks on her, check out the log books (if still there) & see how often serviced..
Might be worth spending a bit more $$$ & get something with less K's..
    Just my 2 bobs worth..

I guess if you really want the car and you can get it down to 4k, i guess... but you could get something that needs less work and hassle for about the same price couldn't you? By that i mean all the money you are gunna spend on it whn you get it (inluding that mystery leak!).

    omg 250k no way
mate i bought my vt 2 yrs ago with 125k but i did pay a lil more 4 it $8000
bought it from an old guy who used it just to go to the local shops and the RSL club.
i did a lot of shopping around and it paid off. its a great car.
my advice is go shopping, look at everything out there. you wont regret it, i didnt.

    hope this helps!!

The Red Book gives as a price guide $3400-$4900, depending on the K's. You should be looking for a vehicle that is ready to go, something you don't have to put your hands in your pocket as soon as you buy it.

    Don't buy it imo.
    I just bought a vt 98 with abs,cruise,amp,sub,dvd,screen.. etc
140,xxx kms for $4100 with some really nice mods already done.
Only thing that needs doing is the fuel pump but runs fine for now.
If I was you I would look around more, that car sounds like a lemon for that price

far too much considering all the things youd have to fix.

with 250ks on the clock the problems are just gonna get more expensive, and more frequent

Thanks for all your advice. Held out and didn't buy the car, but found another, '02 VXII Berlina, much better condition (inside and out) only 150,000k on it and mechanically excellent!
