Default Fuel gauge problems in my VT.

I own a 97' VT SS commodore and recently i filled my tank up and drove home, when i got home i noticed my fuel light was on and it showed empty on my fuel guage. On the trip computer is shows '----' for distance till empty.
Anyone had this happen to them and know how to fix it?
or should i take it in to have it looked at?
im a novice when it comes to cars lol
im 100% percent certain its not empty.
