    Default vt berlina gear problem

hey guys, sorry if this issue has been covered before. I checked with the search tool but couldn't seem to find an answer. ok, so I just recently bought my first car it's a 98 vt berlina. I've had it for a few weeks now and last night I was cruzing down the highway just comfortably sitting on about 100 on flat road wen my car jus decided to drop back to third and continued to stay there. I pulled over after a while and put in park with the car still turned on. I then took off after a few minutes to see if the problem had sorted itself out but sadly It still wouldn't get past 3rd. it wasn't untill I stopped at the shops, turned my car off, did my shopping, came out and drove back home that it had seemed to have fixed it self. I drove around today and seems to be fine. just wondering is this a common problem and should I be worried? any help would be great. my car is a 1998 vt berlina automatic with 170,000 on the clock if that helps. cheers.

My VR used to do that whenever i was towing a really heavy load. This sounds like the overdrive isn't working properly and shifting it down to 4th but I don't really know, sorry.

na the power button wasn't on. it's got me stumped, I've checked the trans fluid and it's all good. maybe I should jus take it to a mechanic and get the auto serviced or something. it's been fine since it happened the other day though so maybe it was just a one off thing, I hope.

common symptom, when was the last time it was serviced?

and its more than likely the heat override for overdrive, if the trans runs hot you lose overdrive

i delt with it for ages because the trans slipped under load, got hot and bam no overdrive

I've got no wen the trans was last serviced as I only just bought it a few weeks ago and I wasn't told alot about it's history. I think I'll just take it in for a service and get it checked out. thanks for the help guys. cheers.
