I recently bought a VX. The guy before me had an after market stereo installed. When he sold it to me he put the original stereo back in. The problem being is the controls on the steering wheel now don't work with the unit. What is involved in getting the steering wheel controls to work with the stock unit. Can anyone help, thanks.
Maybe he forgot to plug the controls back into the head unit.
MY RIDE
I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.
I agree, take it out and check that its all connected properly
Yay! My 100th post! Woo hoo!
The wiring goes from the steering wheel buttons, through the clock spring to a 2 pin connector. Then it goes to the back of the headunit. So by the sounds of it something is unplugged.
Is the factory radio a VX radio (i.e. not VT)? I'm not 100% sure but i believe it has to be a VX headunit to get the s/w controls to work (unless it's a "Maestro" unit from a Calais or Stato).
If this helps, here is a brief list of the different model headunits in VT & VX (assuming a "standard" headunit fitted, not an optional or upgraded one):
VT & WH
Executive, Acclaim, S, SS: Cassette player only
Berlina: Cassette AND single CD player
Calais, Statesman & Caprice: Cassette player only, with CD Changer controls
VX & WHII
Executive, Acclaim, S, SS: CD player only
Berlina: Cassette AND single CD player (same as VT)
Calais, Statesman & Caprice: Cassette player only, with CD Changer controls (same as VT)
Thanks guys for the ideas, I will check the unit again this weekend. I had the unit out when I first bought the car, cause the buttons weren't working. Everything looked like it was plugged in. It could well be a unit from a different model. Thanks again. Will let you know if I find anything amiss.
