I've been looking over the whole site for hours now and there seems to be no sure fire way of fixing the squeaks in the VT doors and windows.
I have a VT s2 (wagon) with the felt rubbers and it still squeaks.
I want to get this post to just list the top 5 or 6 fixes in the one spot.
The VT is over 10 years old now so surley someone has a 99% sure fire solution (no not buy another car).
This squeak is really pee-ing me off.
Lets knock this subject on the head.
Thanks
Darren

The last few threads on here don't seem to go into it, but the door strikers on the VT tend to lose their plastic covers, allowing the latch to have movement on the striker.
I haven't tried new strikers yet, but I have experimented with belt grip & adjusting the strikers.
Belt grip applied to all the rubber seals seems to take away a bit of movement. The big bumps still cause the door to rattle, but at least it shuts up the constant rattling with normal movement of the car. Eventually the rubbers get dusty or the belt grip loses its grip and the doors start rattling again. It's easy to apply though. Oh, the other thing is it leaves yellowish marks on the paint where the rubber seals contact. Can be cleaned off with prepsol.
I also moved the strikers on the front doors inwards, to make the door shut tighter against the frame. This seemed to take away most of the movement too, but can make the doors harder to catch the latch properly and make them misaligned with the body/other doors.
Other things that have been suggested are silicone spray, which i expect does the opposite of belt grip and allows the rubbers to move more freely. Also, a strut brace minimises flex in the front of the body so the doors have less movement.
The window is another story. There is a hex screw adjuster on the back of the door that adjusts the position the window stops at when right up. This can stop creaks and rattles in the window when wound up.
When wound down, there are plastic runners in the window tracks that wear away/break and allow rattling. Also there is a fix of putting an extra washer in the lower mountings to move the window away from the regulator.
I haven't done this, I just keep my window up as much as I can![]()
The problem with the VT onwards is that the firewall is laminated in place instead of welding it which makes the body flex more.
there are three types of people in the world , those who can count and those who can't
I have suffered from squeaking windows that only worsened as the suspension was hardened and tyre profiles thinned. A strut brace gives a much tighter front end and stops "doorbanging" when going really hard at HIGH speed.
Try McGuire's Trim Detailer. Get in and clean, clean, clean the rubber around the windows and especially across the top of the door trim. Dry and apply the McGuire's. After a month or two and a few applications the rubber softens up and loses the hard, squeaky surface. Any rubber on rubber with wax or detergent will sqeak so it may take you a couple of goes to find all of the spots.
ok
moved door latch in a bit. seems to help some . The plastic bit was worn.
anorak do you mean the inside door trim or the outside of the car.
thanks
bloody god dam window sqweeks are driving me around the f ing bend.
My window goes tick tick tick when it gets the sun on it.
the top of the window right near the b piller squeaks over every bump.
its driving me sh1t crazy.
STOP IT JUST STOP IT FOR CHRIST SAKES.
ok settled down now. need a fix.
at 100kmp/h i have a constant whistle that even my sound system cant make it disapearnow that is annoying! my doors also squeek but im used to that....
wind your window up till it wont go any further, then drop it down about 4-6mm and the rattle and squeaks disapper
I've been told it's the tabs at the top of the door frame - remove the rubber in the top of the frame and adjust the tabs down a little. I have not tried this myself - but can see how they let the window rattle/squeak.
Side note - I had a very annoying squeak left front door on my VN wagon a few years ago. To stop it I put masking tape on the door rubber along the bottom of the door. Squeak stopped. It was the paint finish on the door (repainted in 2 pack). Put a different door rubber in - no fix - put tape back on it. The tape jhas perrished in place now - but no squeak.

Can someone please post a picture or diagram of where this screw is? I can't seem to locate it. My passenger window is driving me batty also.
you have to wind the window down half way to see it. its a allen head bolt just loosen it it off push up 3-4 mm. i did this to my vx fixed a slight water leak problem and window squeaking. . . . . gl
also this thread should be put in how to's or were ever these go sticky
Its a lost case... Everything rattles in a VT, exspecially when lowered with stiffer shocks it tends to get worse.
VN's without central locking have the plastic coating which falls off, if they have centreal locking then I don't think they have the plastic. If the plastic is missing and the striker is not loose on its backing plate just tape it with electrical tape it works for years.
What's the graphite stuff like? I imagined it to be a dry powder that would be ideal for the felt seals that the windows seat against when closed? The vy gives a slight squeek here and there too, and I wondered about the graphite. I use armour all on all my rubber seals, but not sure about what to use on the felt coated rubber.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
If you use graphite, you'll get black sh!t over your hands and clothes. Try silicon spray; makes for easy sliding on sticky windows.
Thanks for the heads up 87LAG. I'll have a look tomorrow.
yeah, i did the graphite once...what a mess.
Silicone spray seems to quiet down some of the noise, but my drivers side window strill creaks and craps me to tears.
I've checked and none of my strikers have the black plastic, and I don't remember if it ever did have it. I bought the car new in '99.
Had a really anoying grinding noise [like the window channels were full of sand ] every time you operated drivers window. Pulled the door trim off and found one of the plastic regulator sliders had broken in half, the arm closest to the outer door handle was'nt even in the window channel, still operated perfect, just bad noises. Had a 2nd hand door off a vs lying around, popped the plastic slider off, wasent easy 2 big screwdrivers put it in my window channel lubed it up with bearing grease and squeased the ball in with a pair of multi grips. Window has never sounded better, not a squeak or groan.
Can I please have some feedback on a slight rattling noise which appears to be coming from the passenger side window of my VE mostly prevalent on an uneven road surface (when window is completely closed)?
Your feedback will be appreciated!
i have the final answer my car no longer creeks
1. clean the rubber seals with wd40 or similar and i mean clean them
2. get a stiff brush and clean/scrub all door flock tape and you'll get dust coming of them
3. adjust the window there's a 3 mm hex screw adjustment at the top of every window loosen them drop the window an inch then fully closed and tighten the scew
4. enjoy quite driving
I used vaseline on the windows to stop them annoying me. Worked for about 3 4 months, but nothing ever stops it for good.
