fuel problem any help appreciated vx

hey all I am having a problem with fuel with my vx equipe, it started a week ago where it started and chugged its heart out for a few km's(surged backfired splutted etc) then came good and run fine but wouldnt start again til it came cold. now it wont start at all! it stinks of rich fuel and is hissing and backfiring, i have changed /checked most sensors but cant seem to find an answer that relates to whats happening, everyone says fuel pump but if it was fuel pump why whould it start sometimes then not? i am changing filter at moment(well tryinng to) just to exclude this too....... anyone come across this??????

it can be your fuel pump even a faulty pump can sometimes start the car and idle but try to go and it will die
