    Default vt radio removal

hey does anyone know how to remove the radio from a vt? its got 4 little holes in the front and thats it. i need to get it out because im doing the heater core on my mates mums car. it is proving to be more difficult to get the damn radio out than to replace the heater core.

Its relatively easy. Get a coathanger, or something similar size & cut it into 2 25cm lengths. Bend it un a |_| shape so the sides fit into the holes on the side of the radio.

Put both the pins in the side of the radio about 20mm or a bit less. If your lucky the radio will pop out, a but normally you have to very gently push the coathangers out a bit (Only 10mm or so) & gently pull out. The radio should pull out. It might take a few goes, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy

Let us know how you go with the heater core, as mines busted aswell and needs replacing. Ive been putting off fixing it cause it seems like its going to be a real prick off a job. ATM ive just disconnected the heater hoses and blanked them off, but i have to get my arse into gear and fix it, the weathers getting quite cold now.

Ages ago on a VC Commodore I replaced it, but too long ago to remember specifics, sorry. Some of the other cars (Not commodores) are MUCH easier to do - some are literally a 20 min job, but alas not the holdens

The coat hanger thingy works perfectly. I made up 2 of these exactly the same way about 5 yrs ago to remove the radio in my VT Wagon so I could change my own aerial. (broken by vandalism) The dealer was too busy to do it for over a week and there was no way I was driving from Melb to Brizzy and back with no radio reception! I'm sure I've still got them in my tool box. Very effective and all I had to do was sacrifice a coat hanger to make them.

If you are careful, you can do it without making scratches.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I need to know how to get the factory head unit back IN. It's the cd/cassette out of a VT Series 2. I almost get it all the way in and it stops. I figure it must be the wiring coiling up behind it instead of going down the back. Any tips?

The wiring loom which plugs into the back of the radio needs to slide down behind the storage compartment as you slide the radio back in.

Try to work out the clearance between the back of the radio and whatever is behind it and bend/shape the wires accordingly before you plug into the radio.

Thanks for that man. That's what I was thinking when I tried reinstalling it. Probably just didn't have the patience at the time!
