Just bought a VXII V6 auto. Already have a VSII V6 auto. Holden recommends different grades of oil for each. Why? What engine oil should I use?
i would use 10w 40w is about right 4 the the vx.
Thanks for your reply. But why does the manual recommend 10/40 for a VXII but 20/50 for a VSII? Also, the manual states the VSII takes 4.3 litres of engine oil while the VXII takes 4.8 litres. They're both ECOTECH 3.8 engines.
Even though their the same engine, the vx is better machined so that its tolerances are smaller than the vs thus only requiring the thinner, more modern oil. Thickness of oil also depends on how many k's you've done. The older the engine, the thicker the oil should be so the engine lasts longer. With the size, could be that the vs ran a larger sump or longer lines than the vx.
The original rating for both engines is ISLAC GF-3 which is 10W-30, but probably too thin for Australian temps (unless you live in a snow area) plus also the early VS had oil consumption problems, so 20W-50 was used more commonly (and recommended by Holden as by the time the VS was released it had 20-50 written in the handbook).
Also consider the kms and age of these engines by now, so a slightly thicker oil is probably warranted...
