Default power seering issues vt v6

hey guys iv got a vt v6 done little over 100,000km and the power steering seems to be leaking a little bit. Also when i turn the wheel i hear noises esspeccially when i full lock.

I had the same problem with a VS i had and one day doing a u turn the pump just stopped wrkn (got a recon pump after). I have heard that it is common for commodores to need new pumps around 150,000kms.

Is there anything i can do DIY?
I know i can get a recon pump for like $150 but is this the best option?
Also is it better do do it sooner than later (is it bad to drive once the power steering fails?)

    Cheers,

I dont think you need to rush.
but you will have to replace that pump. being power ASSISTED steering, it shouldnt be a problem to keep running it til it blows up. you'l always have mechanical backup if the pump does go!!

    Patience is a virtue.
You can get a seal kit to repair the pump for under $20. and it is not too difficult to do yourself. Where is the leak, from the pump or the rack?

If the noise you hear is like a groaning noise then you have air in the system and need to bleed the steering.

so if there is air in the system does that mean that it can influence a leak or what or nothing to do with it lol?
the fluid dsnt seem to be going down that quickly, noticable though.
    cheers for help

if the leak is in the rack you will need to get it repaired, or replace it with a refurbished one.
if it's the pump. then it's in your favour! much cheaper

The steering is at maximum pressure when at full lock. If the steering pump is a little dry, then it will make that noise at full or close to full lock (/pressure).

You can buy a product called Lucas power steering additive .I put some in mine and it fixed the leak .
You can get it from Super cheap.
