    Default Wheel Alignment?

Hey guys, just noticed today that my front tyres have a decent amount of tyre wear mainly on the outter sides. I have also noticed that when travelling around 100kph the steering wheel slightly shakes.
Would these two issues be resolved by a wheel alignment or are they another issue?
If it is wheel alignment where is the best place to go and how much am i looking at roughly?
    Thanks guys

Chances are a wheel alignment will not fix these problems.
Sounds like possibly the strut rod to chassis bush are gone, but it's hard to tell without more information.
The wear on the outer edge of of the tyre could simply be from under inflation of your tyres.
Wheel alignments are generally around $55 from most places. I got one done at K-Mart tyre and auto service for $45 and ended up taking it back because the steering wheel was not straight when the car was driving straight. when I get it back - still not straight, just the other side now.
Get it done at a half decent place if you do end up getting it done.

okay thanks jarrod, i checked the tyre pressure about a week ago and it was on 29 which is spot on. So might take it down to pedders to get it checked then.

29 is not spot on, its way too low. try 34. depending on your wheels you may need even more. I would definitely get a wheel alignment with your symptoms. If the wear on the outer edge is from you driving hard around corners ask for some negative camber as well.

29? Geez. I was told to keep my 235/40/18's at 36psi... Or am in the wrong here?
Steering wheel vibrations, you could have dropped a weight off one of your front wheels... try getting them balanced, usually around $10 a wheel.
As for the wheel alignment, Bob Jane Traralgon did mine for $50... My steering was a bit off center, and this fixed it... I think it's a tiny tiny bit out still though.

yeah i thought 29 was low but the card inside the door say 29 or 32 with extra weight, but gonna check again right now just to be 100% certain.
    Thanks for the replies guys.

Some would say that the figures on your tyre placard were put there for when Grandma is driving your car. don't ask me why tho ...

Any tyre or suspension joint will tell you not to go by the tyre placard and inflate more. With my 235/45/17 tyres I was told 40 psi. If you have outer scrub then it would be more to compensate for this.

What size rims and tires? 29/32 could be for the stockies... Or doesn't it make a difference?

    recommended pressures
    15" @ 32-34
    16" @ 32-36
    17" @ 36-38
    18" @ 38-40
    19" @ 40-44

of course u can mess around/experiment with what suits best and also taking into consideration extra weight in the back or whatever

Go by almost skaters post thats wat they should b at.

Also dont bother gettin a wheel alighnment if u still got the same tyres on the fronts that r worn u'll get a wrong camber reading on the machine. best gettin a new set of tyres 1st and then get a wheel alighnment.

Also ur tyres could b due 4 a change which would cause vibations also, balancing will also help but make sure ur rims dont have any slight buckles in them and check/run ur hands over the tyres 4 any abnormal or slight bumps or lumps (Even brand new tyres). Best checked while on the wheel balancer machine ask ur tyre fitter 2 check these and even check them urself while he spins them up on the machine, if they refuse 2 show u leave the joint straight away its their job 2 show u these reguardless, not all tyre fitters r good at wat they do.

Also the shuddering in your steering at speed will be the front wheel balance. Take it to your local tyre store and get them to rebalance your front wheels

If thats all the check cost? do that but take ur work elsewhere as pedders would prolly charge an arm and a leg as usual

okay so went to pedders today just asking for a rough idea on what the problems are and the bloke said that a 4 wheel alignment would fix the steering wheel shakes, BUT he also checked my rear wheels and said that they are on a massive camber and would strongly suggest getting a camber kit put on it as they are out by 2 degrees or something, have heard that this is a common problem in vt's. So the quote for the camber kit + 4 wheel alignment + fitting would be $472.
Is that an average price or too high.
    Thanks guys

What kinda camber kit? 4 point camber kit is the recommendation for a VT, and they quoted me $580 for just the camber kit.
