gday guys, Well I was going to put in a good double din dvd headunit into my vx but they are simply too expensive and the im just going to install a single din headunit. Iv just got a few questions I really dont want to spend more than $200, Has to play mp3 cds. Whats one of the better brand to get? Whats better a aux connection or direct usb connection? Also with a shelf where about do I go to get one to fit the vx? Will I need a surround or will it look good without one?
onw last one, How do the steering wheel controls work. I wish to retain them if I can
One last question with though adaptor cables you get to stop cutting wires ext will it include the power antenna wire with it?
sorry about the questions I really know nothing about stereos
thanks
Hey mate, a lot of these questions have been answered already, you can use the search function to find more knowledge on your questions. I'll answer with what i know.
For the headunit, i think these days brand names are really just personal preference, a good deal is a good deal, others may be able to suggest better brands to buy. Personally i went Pioneer because of how simple and easy it was to use, especially with my ipod.
I spent $180 on my headunit back in december last year. Supports cd, mp3cd, came with an ipod connector cable, has an aux port on the front, has support for a USB cable as well.
A Usb connection would be better than aux, but this also depends on what other devices you have. If you are just going to use a USB flash disk, then a usb cable would be the better option, but if you are going to use an mp3 player that doesn't connect through the usb cable, then aux would be great for that. (i use aux for my phone, i usually put songs i'm really into on my phone, i barely update my ipod these days so i plug in my phone if i want to listen to those songs).
For the steering wheel controls, there are devices available to convert the codes into the remote control codes, and send these signals via infrared.
Your over questions have more than likely been covered before, do a search, you should be able to find it.
thanks mate yeah I did a search but couldent really find all the answers.
So there is no easy way of just connecting the steering wheel controls straight into the headunit and presto?
Hi Ruggj,
I have a vx 2001 series 1. A new head unit has already been installed. it has a remote. Here you mention the steering wheel controls can be programed to match? where and how do you get that done? thanks Admk

I purchased a touchscreen double din DVD player headunit off ebay for around $130. Plays stuff off your ipod, plays dvds, CDs, mp3s, shows images and all that junk. Wasn't hard at all to hook up either.
You get what you pay for and then some.
Its not exactly state of the art, the screen is a bit pixelated with the menus and stuff, but playing DVDs is fine, comes with a remote. You can play videos and music off a dvd or a data disc aswell.
If your on a tight budget and are determined for a double din, do what I did.
Depending on the headunit you have a few options, most head units these days come with a steering wheel remote wire that you just wire straight to your factory steering wheel controls. You do however in the commodores need to modify the controls. A mate of mine has had his working perfectly on his pioneer headunit for months now, not 100% sure what he had to do to the controls but he did have to remove them and do a soldering job.
You can get a cat9 or cat10 from car audio specialist shops, you could also try contacting michaelw on here and see if he is still making his ir adaptor, I used it on my pioneer and it worked flawlessly.
Feel free to PM me as I don't come on here that often anymore
You can buy din pockets from Supercheap etc rather than having to buy online and wait for postage. Im running a double din head unit looks schmick, i was like yourself at first "I WANT MY STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS..." you forget they are even there after a day or 2, and my controls are still hooked up on the steering wheel"
