if you were going to get a new key cut a lock smiths would prolly be cheaper than going to holden.

Buy a new one and get Holden or high end locksmith to program it or you will be posting again soon that the battery is flat in your remote

To answer the original question about programming, no, you can't do it yourself. You can program a blank key though, but not one that has already been done.

Just so you know you can re-program the key fobs if they have already been coded to another car previously i have many people come into the shop that have bought a fob from the wreckers as long as you write the fob back to default first 004462 then your fine to use it again

    cheers

That is interesting but is it widely known by the people in your type of business? I have always understood that you can't re-program them.

yep it good to let people know i work for company store not franchise and we have been told not to do it anymore obviously the company wants to make money from the sale of a new unit but i still do it if asked nicely without charge as only takes a minute but yeah if you have access to an rw4 or even the older rw2 with com reader or another programmer give it a try i will clarify one thing up tho so not to **** people around so be aware

you can only re-write key fobs for the commodores up to vx as from the vy series there was a 2nd stasge to the programing circut that WILL NOT allow to re write

    cheers

Typical of Holden, always looking for ways to get you to spend more money.

I have 2 remotes for my VTII Berlina with worn buttons and i think one of them is due for a battery replacement. I found a guy on ebay that sells aftermarket (chevorlet branded) 3 button remotes that are designed to open into 2 pieces when unscrewed ($35 each). I ordered 2 this week, so hopefully i get my hands on them soon. [search "Holden Commodore Chevrolet 3 Button Remote Key Shell"]

All you need to do is crack open the originals, drop the insides into the new case and screw it shut. The battery code is somewhere on this forum (maybe even this thread?) so you can swap it out with some soldering and away you go again.

Question though, if the battery fully dies on a remote, does it need reprogramming when a fresh battery is dropped into it??

    Cheers,
    Eddie

Eddie, I have removed the battery and put a fresh one in before, and the card held its memory OK.
The mate did the same with no problems.
