    Default VX aerial Coax

    Hi All,

Hoping someone can help me with how to join two lengths of coax from the aerial cable on a VX commodore. Just bought a VX series 2 and decided to have a look at why the automatic aerial was not working. It looked like the motor was working fine so bought a new aerial and nylon drive. Ran across a big problem which I have now seen others have had in that the inner sleeve from the old mast was basically corroded or welded onto the mast housing. In the end I cut the coax cable so that I could remove the Mast housing and drill out the old inner sleeve. After doing a pretty dodgy job of rejoining the two lengths of coax I found the reception on several stations to be very average. After looking at some of the bits I had cutoff I realised that there was actually a very very fine inner core running through the coax which I had failed to attempt joining. I have been down to jaycar and they have never seen such a thin inner core on coax and I have no idea how I would even strip the insulating nylon sheath without also taking out the inner core. Has anyone seen this before and do you have any suggestions on a way forward

Ive gotta replace the rope + mast on my VX soon, so i havent pulled the guard of yet to tell you anything, BUT
on my VN wagon, if you kept pulling the coax outta the car, there was a joiner built in (behind the dash) where the antenna just plugged into. VX's might have that too

Yeah I think you are right but my problem is how to splice this coax. Good luck with replacing your rope and mast. What I thought would be a half hour job ended up taking an entire day mainly due to the inner sleeve being stuck in the mast housing.

you have to get some rg59 twist on connectors and coax coupler to join coax together

Thanks dannnyn12, any tips on stripping the nylon that goes around the inner core without also cutting the inner core?

Yeah I got some RG59 connectors and they were way too big, then tried some RG58's and still too big. As I said the inner core is tiny, like one thin strand.
