vt ss s2 gen3 pinging

i am having problems with my gen3 pinging when around 4500 5000 rpm. wat is the likely cause of this. i heard that it is most probly the knock sensor not working but wouldn't that trigger the engine light to come on? its driving me crazy if any1 has any clues on it it would much appreciated
