Do you have speed sensitive steering? Has the steering gone completely hard or just harder than normal. My steering goes a bit harder occasionally (like it's lost the speed sensitive part) but then I restart the car and it's fixed.

If the power steering does not work when the car is turned on and then if you turn the ignition off then on and it works your BCM computer is about to fail. I had it happen to me.

It must be a common fault because mine does the same thing but only when driving at low speeds on a hot day.

That's good to know. Hopefully mine will last for a while longer, it's only done it about 3 times in 2 years. Thanks for the information, I wasn't even aware that the BCM controlled the speed sensitive steering. Now I can tell my daughter's boyfriend what's wrong with his VY Calais.

Make sure your power steering/alternator/Ac belt is in good condition and isn't slipping.
