does anyone know a good diagnostic scan tool for use on holdens. my boss has a cheap one from jay car. works fine on fords but doesn't work on holdens and as both mine and my partners cars are holden i need one thats gonna work. on both.
cars are 99 vt v6 and 98 sB barina
they sell scan tools on ebay
$335 for vt-x one from memory
cheers GM
I think that you need to be careful with selecting a scan tool. Many will only work with the OBD2 protocols and some not with all of those, despite having the OBD2 connector. I think that VT-Gen3 use OBD2 CAN (perhaps someone can confirm or refute that) but not the V6's (until 2003?).
This may be why Jaycar refuses returns on the scan tool that they sell; it requires OBD2 but people were buying it to use on VR, VS etc.
How do these scan tools compare to Holden's Tech2, I have often asked a few of the local
workshops and usually get the answer yes we have a scan tool and can read your codes if they pop up (not really sure what they have), but I have often wondered if you got a tricky hard to diagnose fault if you would have to track back to Holden to get it sorted.
VT-VY V6 use ALDL
VT Series I V8 (5L) uses ALDL
VTII V8 (5.7L) on use OBD2
There are scantools for ALDL on ebay for about $150-180, but they won't do the Gen3.
Barina...you'd have to check that one! Don't know what protocol it used.
sweet thanks for the info... was gonna buy one of ebay but didnt wanna buy one that wouldnt work... rather useless doing that really.
I thought the paperclip gave the same codes through the dash!?!
maybe check capa performance website saw a scan tool in there suplus stock page you can prolly ring them to find out what it does and wont do think it was $145 hope this helps.
