Hello
New to the thread and tried a search but got hundreds of results, and am now hoping to tap in to peoples experience.
I have a VU V8 manual ute, I have since fitted a cold air induction kit, hi-flow air-filter and performance exhaust system (cat back) mainly for the sound. In a straight line in the dry, if I floor it in 1st the rear breaks traction, in 2nd it generally just grips. It recently ran on the dyno with 201 rwkw. I have been quoted headers ($1200) will give an extra 30kW, performance tune ($700) will give around 250 rwkw and MAF kit upgrade and performance tune ($700 + $700) will give around 300 rwkw. So all up I could have over 300rwkw for under $3k.
I'm not interested in doing burnouts or racing, just that smile on face factor when driving, is there a point when additional rwkw on a ute become useless unless you are going to drive at dangerous speeds? Also are any of these mods not really worth doing and or will reduce engine life/reliability?
Thanks in Advance

you wont be getting 300rwkw with that. not without a cam at least
1995 Manual HSV Clubsport
Wade Cam :: 9.2:1 CR :: Pacemaker headers :: Twin 2.5" Exhaust :: VT Brakes
1991 Supercharged VN Berlina
9 PSI SC14 Intercooled :: Genie headers :: Twin cats :: HM Twin 2.25 exhaust :: 3.45:1 LSD
engine mods like performance lifters and cams can stress the engine and the driveline, reducing lifespan (interestingly it can be argued that because less rpm is needed to go fast less stress is being caused)- gearboxes, clutches and diffs all suffer if they are stock. engine mods like you mention shouldnt be a drama however if your driveline is in good nick, but is for instance your auto is on its last legs then you can kiss it goodby with 300rwkws
There is a thing called to much power but 300rwkw is not it,it depends on the person i suppose, i for one could happily drive around in a car with 300rwkw with not a a problem but i know people that i wouldn't go near with if they drove 300rwkw car and you wont get 300rwkw with those mods you have listed anyway, you will probably get 300kw at the engine though, maybe a little bit more, maybe a little bit less.
Yes, I would say there definately is "too much power" for the street, but as said above 300kw is not it,(if you get there).
I recently witnessed a 68 camaro being built, 530+ cube BBC, peaking at about 850-900hp, about 650w to you and me. I shit you not driving on the freeway, the guy leans on the throttle slightly and the tyres start frying. Now personally I think that is "undrivable", farkin tough, but pretty silly.
All in good fun

There is no such thing as stupid questions, Only stupid people.
If you stick in a reasonable sized cam you might see 300rwkw with the mods youve mentioned mate.
As for too much power, I guess it depends how you drive. My car is still fairly good, even in wet weather, as the power doesnt kick in until around the 2200rpm mark.
With these mods though, you'll want to put in a HD clutch, which may make driving a little annoying at times.
i dont think there anything bout having to much power the more power the better i say![]()
You'll be lucky to see 230rwkw with those mods.
You've listed two tunes there. You can only tune the car once. Which will be your MAFless tune by the sounds of it.
The thing is (unless you are a freak like Luke and have a different device to make boost in every rpm range) When you are making more power you are also losing power down low, so chances are a cammed 300rwkw LS1 has muuuuuuuch better traction than a 240 rwkw LS1 so in the end the more powerfull car is more tame on the street. In the end for a street car that's what it's all about, having as much power as you can at the rev point that the tyres will stick at everywhere under 100km/h. Going past that has no real purpose
no such thing as to much powe XD
