    Default power steering.

    hey all,

i had a mate service my car a couple of weeks ago (110,000 kms) and he mentioned that he thought my power steering fluid was low, he had a look around and couldnt find any leaks or fluid anywhere. Anyways topped it up and off i went....he had a look under my hood and notcied that it was somewhat low again (not as low as last time but enough to notice that some had disappeared.
its a 2000 vt s pack, and doesnt miss a beat!

so i was wondering if anyone knew of common problems or is my power steering fluid just pulling a houdini?

check all around the rack, especially the rubber boots on each end could be wet with fluid , and around the pump and hoses. Run your finger around all the high pressure hose fittings to and see if they are wet.

Hey mate, had the same problem which ended up getting worse. First thing I did was give the engine a good dose of degreaser and hit it with the pressure washer, it's a lot easier to see if there's any leaks. The main thing you will see if it is the pump is fluid on the ground beneath it. In the end though it turned out the seals in the pump were gone and was losing a lot of fluid through it. Got a second hand pump from the wreckers for about $50 put it in and it worked beautifully, you usually find the seals inside the pump can break down at around 200000-250000k. It's not too bad to put in yourself either. If you want you can also buy a seal kit and pull the pump apart and replace them, with the kit costing around $15 from a holden dealer.

Its also worth checking all the rubber hoses and making sure that the Hose Clamps are reasonably tight. (Not too tight). There are about 4-5 Clamps you need to check. These can leak and cause your Reservoir to become low.
