    Default VX SS Drive Shaft

Took my car in to the mechanics today to take a look at a clacking noise coming from the rear right hand wheel area.

They told me it seems to be coming from the righthand drive shaft from the diff to the wheel, and they would take it apart tomorrow since they ran out of time this arvo.

I'm not mechanicaly minded and know enough to get myself into trouble if you know what I mean.
Has anyone got an idea of how much drive shafts are to replace and if a 2nd hand one would be fine to use? or even if there are repair kits for the bearings or somthing if thats where the problem is.

The reason I ask is im running low on cash atm and need my car for work alot, so I need to get it fixed but want to take the cheapest but still reliable way about it.

    Thanks

Find out what they tell you the problem is first, otherwise its impossible to say, if your looking for cheap and they hit you with a major part, go to the wreckers.

The best way to do it would be to get a reco'd shaft. Holden wanted $300 TRADE for one of these shafts when i priced it up.

I went through a Driveshaft reconditioning company and picked up the pair for $240

It's the CV's at the end of the shafts that bugger up.

Replacing the shafts isnt a big job at all, it's a job that can even be done on the floor in the garage.

The only tools you will need is a jack, a ratchet, a breaker bar, and an 8mm hex socket.

*Jack the car up, support it on jackstands.
*Loosen off all of the bolts holding the driveshaft to the diff and the hub.
*Undo all of the bolts and the old shaft will pull out
*With the jack, jack the suspension arm upwards, to reduce the angle to get the new shaft in.
*Do not let the driveshaft deflect too much as this can damage it*
*I found that if i put the shaft onto the hub end first, started some of the bolts to pull it in closer, and then got a large flatblade to push back on the diff end of the shaft to get it into the holder on the diff, it was much easier.
*You can also manipulate the suspension arm up and down to help get the shaft in
*Tighten all bolts up to torque specifications and lower car.

Job done. It shouldnt take anymore than an hour to an hour and a half to get the shaft out and the new one in, and you'll save yourself some labour cost.

right on the ball guys was the cv at the end of the shaft, had it fixed up cost me $306, problem is the noise stopped completely but a few days later its back. Took it back to the mechanic he's concerned it may be the diff causing the problem, or the one on the other side is buggered also.

I did abit of calling around town for another diff just to get an idea of a price if it is that, only one place local has one done 80,00km lsd abs ect.. want $660 for it plus labour to install it.
think thats abit pricy for one?

I live in Bendigo, Vic, would travell to Melbourne if i could save a few dollors, anyone know of a place in Melbourne that I could take a look?
