I have a 1999 Holden Commodore SS VT, Auto. Every time I start it up in the morning, I hear this ticking sound, and almost always the engine light lights up, from the front of the car. After about 2 minutes it stops, but the engine light stays on. When I stop the car, and then start it up, the engine light goes away, and I do not hear ticking. It seems whenever it is cold I get this noise. Do you know what it might be.
hi i have had the same problem with my VT II Berlina (1999) since i got it. have had it about 8-9 months, has always had a ticking sound in the engine when i accellerate, is only when i first start the car and drive and is gone within a couple of minutes. haven't noticed the engine light coming on though.
had it serviced recently at 200,000 kms and the mechanic wasn't even sure what it was, i've been told it could be the hydraulic lifters or tappitts. i'm not mechanically-minded lol so know sweet f-all about these things, i tried changing the oil (which is one thing i can do myself lol) and put some wynns stuff thru it, etc but nothing helped.
wouldn't mind knowing what the problem is! is annoying, i go to take off and have this ticking sound which shits me and prob is louder outside the car, so ppl can probably hear how crap my car sounds.
Tappitts for sure. I worked selling comodores and the amount of times I had customers come back with that problem and when sent to service 90% was an issue with Tappitts.
Had a similar problem with my car turned out to be an exhaust leak from the extractors.
Thanks guys for your answers... I will print them off and show a friend, who might be able to look at it. I know what you mean msabell, as I know people hear mine when I start it up (my boss even commented one day jokingly that his was better because it didn't have that ticking... he has a holden commodore ute 2004). I get really embarrassed. Once the ticking stops I feel more at ease.

thanks requiem, what are tappitts worth to replace etc? is it a big, costly job? as far as i know it's only making the sound but isn't doing any damage. would be nice if it was gone tho ..
I just spoke to my friend who said "If its only on start up first thing in the morning I would not worry"... mmmm not sure why they would say that. I'd rather not have the noise. Is it a difficult job to do.
my mate has the same problem and its the tappets, costs to much to fix so he just got an exhaust to cover the sound slightly lol, prob not the best idea but yeah tappets.
Cool thanks for that will pass this bit of info on.
Added an additive into the oil for Lifters, and the next morning there was no ticking sound, but then at the end of the day when I started it up, the ticking was still there?
you prob need new lifters. Not worth the trouble to be honest
So you reckon it is Ok to leave it? e.g. it won't get worse or damage the car? Cool if you think it will be OK. The car has cost me a lot to get everything sorted, so not having to worry about this latest thing will be a nice change)
well ive been told they dont ruin your engine and thats why my mate never got his fixed, but it is really annoying. But im not certain on this, your best bet is to call up a few places and see if poor lifters ruin your engine, maybe also try holden
