    Default VT S Security?

I have a 1998 VT S and was wondering how safe the car is security wise. What is the likey hood of it being stolen? And if you know what security features it has. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I've got a 98 VT S-Pack, but it is the more basic model that didn't come with a security system. So basically, no alarm, and thus not very secure. However, put it this way... would you prefer an alarm as a deterrent before the crime is committed, or after? Because all VT's have the blinking dash light and the writing on the window saying that the car has an alarm.

You may have an alarm if you have the more optioned model. You can test this by locking the car with your keyfob, and then from inside the car, unlocking the door lock, and opening the door. If the alarm doesn't sound, then you haven't got one installed.

You can also deadlock the door. After getting out of the car, just put your key into the outside keyhole and turn it in the lock direction twice. This will mean that if someone breaks the window and tries to unlock the door, it won't unlock from the inside. This means they have to climb in the window... which makes it less inviting to steal.

You can also get an immobilizer fitted professionally for not too much money. Basically it will prevent the car from being started unless it is unlocked by you pressing the button (which you hide somewhere in the car). Be warned tho, experienced thieves do know about immobilizers and are quite good at finding the buttons!

Hope this info helps, and good luck!

With the immobilizer, I'm sure all VTs have them factory fitted as standard. I think when you lock the car with your remote, it activates the immobilizer, and when you unlock it, it deactivates it. If your remote ever fails, you can still start the car as the key will connect to the silver ring around the ignition and deactivate the immobilizer.

Get ur self an alarm and immobiler. Got one installed on the ss last week $399 and packed with lots of goodies. If your from SA you can check out the place i got my alarm installed TISONICS www.tisonics.com.au. You may also consider cyclops or cheeta systems as they have good reputations. Autobarn can help you get one installed or ur local auto electrician. If you really wanna look after the vt and protect your car get an alarm installed and double lock it. Also use a steering lock just to make it that little harder for the buggers 2 steal it!!!
    Cheers.

A wide flat bladed screw driver put in behind the plastic surround at the very rear of the rear quater window, will enable you to lever and pop out the little rear quarter window. From there, you can reach in an open the rear passengers door lock and get in.

I do not know if the VT series 1 had dead locking, but the series 2 did. Always dead lock (double press the lock on the keyfob).

*** From Memory*** With the series 1 VT commodores you had to put the key in the driver door lock and turn it anti-clockwise twice to activate the deadlock. With the series 2 you could deadlock by pressing the lock button on the remote twice. As seedyrom also said, the series 1's had the problem of easy access through the rear quater window but I believe that this was fixed in the series 2.
