    Default VT over heating

Hey guys recently my car has been flashing HOT on the little lcd screen and the temp needle jumps straight up. about 10 seconds at idle and the needle will move down a little bit.
Then as i take off the temp goes back down to normal. This happens on and off every now and then, last week added more coolant and engine oil and also a new air filter and it worked great for 2 weeks now its just started again any ideas of what this could be i really dont wanna be spending big money when the mechanic starts charging me all over the shop
    Cheers guys

Are there any coolant leaks? Check under your car while there's pressure in the system (while hot). Has any one done anything to the cooling system that may have let air in?
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'

I would be looking at the thermostat first, it could be sticking in the closed position till the coolant overheats, then suddenly opening, bringing the temp back to normal.
Perhaps the temperature sender, located on the side of the thermostat housing or its connector, is at fault.

What usually happens is the coolant level drops a little so that the sender unit is actually not completely covered by coolant. Steam is hotter than coolant, so the gauge will read high when idling, then as the revs build up, the sensor gets covered by the flowing coolant and the gauge drops.

You will most likely have a small leak somewhere. The most common place is the inlet manifold gasket on the ecotec. Also check the water pump, all the hoses and make sure the cap is OK. If your expansion tank empties, it could be the cap.

check your cooling system for leaks and make sure the air is bled properly.

is it the heater tap leaking? or is a hose that is leaking going to the heater tap? i had a leaking hose but got recommended to replace the heater tap as well as 9 times out of 10 it will break due to it is very brittle.. I managed to replace the hose without breaking it and it hasn't leaked ever since, $215 is way over priced your better off doing it yourself its not hard at all
