Default How many KMs is too much?

Im looking at a VX as my next car and do a VZ monaro front end conversion on it

Ive narrowed it down to a couple

    This one is red,
    2002 VX executive, 175ks

2002, HOLDEN COMMODORE, Sydney, Private Used, $7,290 at carsguide.com.au

    pros:

    car is in great condition
red would suit the monaro front end conversion, would look mean I reckon

    cons:

    no power windows
    base model executive
car is pretty far away from where I live, good 2.5 hour drive

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This one is silver, but its the 2001 acclaim, it has 190ks but full service history

Holden Commodore Accliam - Trading Post

    pros:

    has power windows
    good condition
    only 40 mins away

    cons:

in my opinion I cant see the silver being that 'in your face' with the monaro front end?
high kms, close to 200 but if its been well looked after, how long should these motors last??

well average km's per year is said to be 20k, so thats a good indication for starters. But the best way is to just go see the car for yourself and take it for a test drive, i only just recently brought a car so i was looking for ages, you can get cars with low kms and just really bad condition and you really cant tell by what the guy over the phone tells you about the car. A lot of them try to lie or just dont know much about the cars. Good luck mate, price also seems to be close to average for those cars, not the best deal of thats what your after

Mine's a VS with the same motor and when I got it, it had high km (200k) for a car it's age (since then it has become more 'average' km's for its age, 245k).
I've had bugger all troubles with it, but you'd want to check for regular servicing and signs of stuff being replaced. Granted, there isn't a whole lot to choose from at the moment if you want to be specific, but both of those cars you have mentioned have pretty high km's for their age. If your concerned about that, I'd wait a little longer if your situation allows it, and keep hunting for the right one.

depends on service log, history of owner etc. You dont want to be buying a car that is from a hoon, nomatter what the km's are on the car. So really its best to do the homework and if the right owners have the car, the engine can last for ages, my friend has a vs that has done 400,000kms and its running fine still.

If all the servicing records are complete and up to date, higher k's may not be a problem, especially as you are talking under 200K still. The higher k's on the ones you are looking at could probably be a bargaining point when it comes time to talk money at purchase time.

The only time the higher k's could affect you after purchase, is when you put a few more k's on the car and possibly click over 200k and go to sell the vehicle again. Whilst a vehicle can still have heaps of life left in it with this many k's, it could become a psychological barrier to any future buyer.

unless it has full service history and you can see it's been done regulary I wouldn't go for one with such high km, but it really comes down to how much you want to spend to what you get to be honest.
you'll have to go check em out see what they're like, i know I would travell 2~3hrs to check out a car.
I went 4.5hrs away and picked up my VX SS and love every bit of it

hi i bought my VTII berlina (1999) late last year with 196,000 km's on it. which i thought was really high, and had been looking at similar cars (vt through vx) on carsguide etc etc with lower km's. but yeh was told 20k a year is average so the one i got was just under that average. didn't come with service history (only thing that nearly stopped me getting it) but in the end i paid $5200 for it, so pretty cheap and otherwise in good nick (cept for a few minor electrical and cosmetic issues).

had a full service done at 200,000kms and since then has run really well, no major problems yet. engine has a slight ticking sound which i've posted on this forum about, have heard it's no big deal but just sounds annoying and is gone after a couple mins.

but i think i agree, you can get a car with 200k on it and it's a great car, and then find a similar model with half that and it's been run into the ground. ya never know til u take it for a drive.

as long as its been looked after and has a service history the car will be fine, u could take the car that is 40mins away to ur mechanic and get him to do a mechanical check they are cheap and he'll tell ya if its been miss treated.

Yea depends on the previous owner and how much tlc it has had.
I would prefer a car with 200k that has full service history with a Nanna driving it, over a car with 100k and a p plater owning it
