vt engine swap

Hey all, just got myself a 98 VT commodore, it might need a new engine. My question is, can i put an engine in from a VR or VS? Is this legal and will it work?
The car has cost me nothing so far so Im just trying to get an idea of what im going to do.

I am pritty sure the engine needs to be same age or newer; so no that wont be legal.
