G'day guys Longtime reader first time poster,
I've got a 2001 VX S-pac manual and i'm starting to save the cash and do my research on improving the overall performance. From a few of the other threads i've read it seems to be the general consensus that it's best to throw away the ecotec and slap in a L67 motor.
Question 1) where can you get a hold of these motors (In sydney) and are there crate engines available or do i have to take a chance with a wreaker one with km's on the dial
Question 2) If i changed the motor do i have to let the RTA know and get an engineer cert? (I'd like to keep it legit)
Question 3) Will the L67 bolt onto the Stock 5 speed box already in the car.
Cheers
A new L67 crate motor goes for about 4.5k, for that much you could get a second hand one strip it down and build it back up with forgies. Your best bet is to scope the wreckers for one with reasonably low k's. You will also need the L67 wiring loom and PCM which should be provided with the motor. It will be better if you can get one with the gearbox as the L67 boxes were built tougher than the ecotecs ones to handle the extra power. I suggest that before you put it into your car, strip it down and replace anything that has seen better days, who knows how long that motor has been sitting there or what its been through.
As for your old ecotec, dont throw it away or sell it. Who knows when you might need it.
Hope this helps
Cheers
Thanks for the info mate
I didn't know they made a manual box to go with the supercharged 6 commodores is it just the getrag? I've been told that holden never produced a manual version of their supercharged commodores but i could be wrong thats wat these forums are for i guess. I've had a mooch around a few wreaking yards for l67 wrecks but haven't been able to find one wouldn't have the funds to buy now anyway just want to get a ball park figure on how much $$$$ i'd need so i can save up and blow it all in one go to get everything i need which is why i'm leaning towards the crate engine do you know where i can buy them from?? websites?
Cheers

There is brand new crate motors available still in limited numbers. Saw an add for them in this months treet machine magazine.
Sorry - cant think of the name.
you will have to do some work to get a l67 to bolt onto a 5 speed. the bolts will line but you have to play arounf with the flywheel since all of these motors came with autos... go the l67 Best conversion ever.. im running 23psi on stock internals + cam and getting 278kws at only 3500rpm
Whats the highest psi pulley you can run without a tune

Ive always wondered about an L67 bottom end and L36 heads (L36 i think is the code for the NA std)
L67 bottom ens is great but i'd like to start with more compression than an l67, to run elss boost. I want to use an intercooled setup and the eaton style blowers aren't easy to intercool either well or effeciently.
My ideas run to an L67 running 9.1 compression at 15psi (manifold) on an interccoled centrifugal setup.
It depends on how holden lowered teh compression ratio I guess. Dished pistons or shorter stroke or pockets in the head.
If its pistons or stroke, then a stock l36 block with l67 crank and bearings and rods and aftermarket acl NA pistons might be the way to go.
Does anyone know where to get 8.5:1 forged pistons for the L36 N/A Ecotec..
( I have a Ecotec turbo I'm thinking to rebuild)
From what I gather the L67 has a 23mm gudgeon pin, where the L36 has a 22mm pin. And compression height is slightly different. (re- ACL)
go to zzperformance.com all ya need for the ecotec and l67 engines
can't wait for the dolar to go higher.. screw shopping in aus heheh when it does ill buy my rebuild from zzperformance
Im waiting it out too. I have watched JE forged ceramic coated pistons fall $150 in the past 3 weeks. Thats a considerable saving. Postage is a killer though.
These parts are listed for L67 but are available in custom sizes.
