gday fellas....gave the vx a service today,i changed the oil, filter and the rocker cover gaskets...i used valvoline 10w-40.....and a ryco filter....after i did it all i took the car for a drive and i noticed the motor was a bit louder than normal...i lifted the bonnet and the motor was louder than normal i could hear a ticking noise....... did i use the wrong oil?? what could i have done wrong?
Did you leave a socket under the rocker cover or something ? How much louder are we talking ?
How many k's on the engine. The oil should not be that dramatic. Possibly more the filter than the oil. The 10w doesnt matter its the last number, the 40 that u wanna vary. I just ran Shell helix ultra 5w40 in my 230,000k;s ecotec and its one of the thinnest 5w40 oils with a cst of 13.1 at operating and i had no extra ticks or idle issues. You need to give more info on engine k;s to be able to help, some engines wear differently and need thicker or thinner oils to make it quiet. Which oil was used before hand ?
Doesn't GMH recommend 20W50 oil for the Ecotec engine? 10W40 would be too thin.
10w40 is fine, depending on engine condition, thats why we need k's. 5w40 is even fine if you know the engine. Holden for the ecotec recommended 10w30(too thin) to 20w50 for ecotec. 5w40 is lowest you would go.
sorry man my bad.....the motor is 140k now....i wouldnt know what oil was used before as this was the first service since ive had it...i used the valvoline synguard 10w-40....i was tossing up between that and Castrol Magnatec. Anyone else had these sort of problems with valvoline?
The oil may be bleeding out of the lifters too quickly. Pop the hood again and slowly bring up the revs and see if the ticking goes away or dulls down the high the revs. If so the oil is too thin and no pumping up the lifters on idle.
