well if i were to take a wild guess....i would say it sounds like the oil isnt thick enough.....or however they describe the dencities......but i was researching what most other people use in their VX's and most people use 10w aswell....any ideas?

How many k's on the engine. The oil should not be that dramatic. Possibly more the filter than the oil. The 10w doesnt matter its the last number, the 40 that u wanna vary. I just ran Shell helix ultra 5w40 in my 230,000k;s ecotec and its one of the thinnest 5w40 oils with a cst of 13.1 at operating and i had no extra ticks or idle issues. You need to give more info on engine k;s to be able to help, some engines wear differently and need thicker or thinner oils to make it quiet. Which oil was used before hand ?

10w40 is fine, depending on engine condition, thats why we need k's. 5w40 is even fine if you know the engine. Holden for the ecotec recommended 10w30(too thin) to 20w50 for ecotec. 5w40 is lowest you would go.

The oil may be bleeding out of the lifters too quickly. Pop the hood again and slowly bring up the revs and see if the ticking goes away or dulls down the high the revs. If so the oil is too thin and no pumping up the lifters on idle.
