    Default Handbrake question

Well I have just snapped my handbrake cable.
It felt like it broke up near the lever, so my question is how much am I looking at to replace it and is it an easy fix or is it a pain in the butt.

I will be able to fit the handbrake cable over a few beers with some mates, I was just after a rough price on how much the cable was going to cost to buy. Is it a 2 piece cable or not, will I have to take out my centre console or not, any advice prior to me starting would great recieved.

by memory its a one-piece cable, either end head off to the wheels and the centre of it hooks over ur handbrake mechanism

For the interior part, take out your front seat (but make sure you disconnect the battery, and wait 5 mins so the air bag light doesn't come on your dash), this makes it really easy to get to the handbrake. There's 2 bolts to hold the handbrake in, unscrew them, there's also a wire connected to the sensor (to say if the handbrake is on or not), just pull that out. There is also a little nut over your handbrake cable, seeming yours is snapped i'd leave it on so you can try pull out that half of the cable.

i changed my handbrake to a leather one and i found it easiest when i took the seat off.

Don't tighten it too much though otherwise your brakes will ride meaning that when the handbrake is off, the brakes will still be touching

The handbrake is tightened from inside the car next to the drivers seat.. remove the rubber cover and tighten the 10mm nut and it will change the free travel of the handbrake lever

Its in the car under the cover beside the drivers seat..

There is also an adjustment at each wheel too but that normally only needs looking at when there is no more adjustment at the handle..

Mine only works on one wheel. Can I adjust something on the one that dosen't work or do you recon something needs replacing? To be honest I don't even know how they work, is there a drum behind the disc?

    Pete SS
stolen from Brakes: Drum vs. Disc
this doesnt help your problem but answers the other question
They were called drum brakes because the components were housed in a round drum that rotated along with the wheel. Inside was a set of shoes that, when the brake pedal was pressed, would force the shoes against the drum and slow the wheel

disc brakes use a slim rotor and small caliper to halt wheel movement. Within the caliper are two brake pads, one on each side of the rotor, that clamp together when the brake pedal is pressed

i figured you couldnt be ****ed reading the whole page and i couldnt be ****ed explaining it so i just stole it instead might be easier to understand with pictures.. google it

sorry, I'll make myself clearer. I'm not sure how the VU handbrake works.

I know how discs and drums work but wasn't sure how holden had their setup. Some manufacturers have a disc and drum setup, where the disc works with the footbrake and the drum only is used for the handbrake. I wondered if this was the setup on the commodores.

take off your back wheels and there will be a clip on the rotar, unscrew that and adjust ur handbrake lever accordingly by moving the adjustment disc.. make sure they arnt to tight however otherwise like it was mentioned it will brake while your not meaning... also next 2 the drivers seat is the easy way of adjusting and is quicker
