at the start of next year i will be selling my vr for a work/daily ute .
im lookin at buying a hsv vu maloo 6spd manual . just want to here if any1 has owned/owns 1 and would like to ask a few questions about the drive train
1) by 2002 was the LS1 piston slap/ burning oil eliminated from the Vt series??
2) is the 6spd gear box reliabe??
3) is there any other faults from the vx/vu series
cheers![]()
piston slap still could be an issue, my 02 vx has it pretty bad.
the box, if its the standard t56 is pretty tough, i give mine a hard time and it still feels pretty good.
cheers for the info mate ..
interms of economy whats the 6spd like on highways / cruising?
i noticed u have a tune/edit heaps diferent??
with piston slap just buy one that doesnt have it?? fuel economy is great with a tune much better than my old vt ecotec.get the series 2 better rear end suspension to rectify camber problems
I've got an VUII SS manual and it's been reliable for the last 18 months that I've had it. I had a leak on the diff where the prop shaft goes in but other than that it's been good. The gearbox whines more than any manual I've ever driven, especially in 2nd and 4th, but all the ones I test drove did. I mainly do stop-start driving round the city and it's terrible on fuel, on a run it's great though, about 11l/100.
You say you're using it as a work horse, what job do you do? I'm a chippy and use mine for work but it's not very practicle with the hard top on. Plus, if it's lowered, you can't carry much weight. They look great though. :-D
economy is wicked, mines tuned by gm motorsport and the economy is great 11lt100 usually and not grandmaing it eitha, mines on SVI lpg now and it does about 13-14lt/100, soo about 500km for $30 on gas![]()
can someone explain piston slap?..
in simple its the pistons not fitting the bore correctly, they are slightly too small, so they have a quite noticeable rattle to them. loud at idle and while they rev down. it was a warrenty issue at holden they were rebuilding heaps of them. next time your at the lights next to one have a listen to it, if it has more than the usual lifter tick then its proberbly got piston slap
hey mate im an apprentice electrician goin for 3rd year start of jan . so i was planning on buying a van and having a daily car but 2 insurances and 2 regos is tough specialy on app wages .. as for the weight i wont be carrying much more then a step ladder my 2 tool bags and a couple of cable drums nothing to extreme .. if nething i will be definantley ggoin for the hard top looks so much better / and is safer!
