piston slap still could be an issue, my 02 vx has it pretty bad.
the box, if its the standard t56 is pretty tough, i give mine a hard time and it still feels pretty good.

I've got an VUII SS manual and it's been reliable for the last 18 months that I've had it. I had a leak on the diff where the prop shaft goes in but other than that it's been good. The gearbox whines more than any manual I've ever driven, especially in 2nd and 4th, but all the ones I test drove did. I mainly do stop-start driving round the city and it's terrible on fuel, on a run it's great though, about 11l/100.

You say you're using it as a work horse, what job do you do? I'm a chippy and use mine for work but it's not very practicle with the hard top on. Plus, if it's lowered, you can't carry much weight. They look great though. :-D

in simple its the pistons not fitting the bore correctly, they are slightly too small, so they have a quite noticeable rattle to them. loud at idle and while they rev down. it was a warrenty issue at holden they were rebuilding heaps of them. next time your at the lights next to one have a listen to it, if it has more than the usual lifter tick then its proberbly got piston slap
