    Default Squealing Brakes

Does anyone know how to stop squealing brakes. Cold there is no noise but after a few kms under light braking there is that annoying squeal. Has only happened since new pads and machined discs. 2001 VX II 3.8.

Hot tip, reverse for about 50m, then slam the brakes on. Repeat 4-5 times.

No worries, had the same problem with my car recently, a few weeks after installing new pads & rotors. The above trick worked great. Just make sure you try it on a secluded road lol.

It's because they wear in a foward motion, reversing and putting on the brakes goes against the natural groove therefore causing it to be rough, which in turn removes the squeek.

    Good luck!

Other options are to take the pads out and rub them on concrete, sandpaper. Basically anything to roughen the pad up.

or just use a decent pad to begin with. Its usually the pad type that makes noise.

had a mechanic do the job so would hope they used decent pads. Can pads make that much difference on street cars?

    absolutely.
Mechanics will use the cheapest pad they think they can get away with unless you ask for something special

They probably didn't bed them in properly.

Find a quiet road, get up to 60km/h then brake HARD down to 10km/h. Avoid coming to a complete stop.
Repeat this 5 or 6 times, when you can smell the brakes, drive around for about 5 - 10 minutes to cool the brakes down.
